Chapter 8

Plague Mask

Plague masks were worn by doctors who treated victims of the plague. The most notable feature, the beak, was filled with a variety of dried flowers, herbs, spices, camphor (a waxy material with a strong odor) or a vinegar sponge. The belief was that the mask would keep away bad smells, which at the time were thought to cause disease.

Comedy and Tragedy Masks

The two masks represent the two types of theater in ancient Greece, Tragedy and Comedy. The masks names are Melpomene (Tragedy) and Thalia (Comedy). The purpose of the masks were to make the emotions of the actor clear to the audience.
