Caldeira continues to list potential “Strakas,” and touches upon some of the supernatural theories about his origins. She goes on to confess that she knows very little about him–“I do not know his birth name, his birthplace, or his native tongue”–and that she has no interest in knowing other people’s opinions on the matter.
This page continues to fuel the mystery behind the enigmatic V. M. Straka with its references to his supposed “occult origins.” The reference to his possible mysterious–almost supernatural–origins portrays Straka in an almost superhuman way. Shining Straka in this sort of light could suggest that he wasn’t simply a single, ordinary person, but another entity of some sort. It adds another dimension to the question: who was V. M. Straka? Or maybe we should be asking: what was V. M. Straka?
Caldeira’s comment about her indifference towards the opinions of others about Straka’s identity continues to support the Caldeira-Straka love theory. Because of her disregard of the theories of other, we can assume that she had her own idea of him, and that it was important to her. It seems as though she is in love with idea of Straka because she has no knowledge of his physical qualities. This also explains her reluctance to theorize about his origins; if she’s in love with the idea of Straka why should his origins matter to her, especially when his origins could change her perspective on him?
In conclusion, this page begins to portray Straka as an idea as opposed to a mystery person.
Jen and Eric also continue to get to know each other, touching on personal topics like Jen’s ex-boyfriend Jacob:
Sounds like me 3 years ago to anyone who didn’t like Jacob (the ex, BTW)
Did it end up mattering what people thought of him?
yeah, b/c they were right. 3 years wasted.
From this short dialogue it’s difficult to judge whether or not they are opening to each other as a result of trust or romantic reasons, but the flirting on Jen’s part suggests the latter:
I’d mention that this also a very cool word but you’d probably flip out again. So I won’t.
Yeah, it’s good that you didn’t.
What does this mean? Only the rest of the story can tell.
