S. helps Stenfalk climb up the rock face. Suddenly Corbeau appears at the top, breathless and excited. “We found a cave,” she tells them.

It is interesting that this short scene ends chapter four. It is unusually hopeful for Ship of Theseus, and suggests that S. and his companions might be safe.

FXC writes in a footnote that many writers joked that Straka must have lived in a cave. FXC defends Straka’s need for privacy and solitude. She writes that caves have historically provided people shelter, and mentions the caves near her birthplace of Lençóis as an example.

Jen writes in response to the footnote that FXC was telling the truth. FXC was from Lençóis; however, Jen notes that caves were only discovered there in the last few years.

Eric suggest that perhaps the locals knew about the cave even though no one else did. He draws a parallel to “VMS knowing about Durand’s cave” before it was officially discovered.

Later, Jen writes that it is surprising that FXC would openly mention her hometown. One possibility is that FXC is leaving a clue for Straka.

Eric writes that he received a big check from Serin, and that he could use it to go to Brazil. It is still unknown who or what Serin really is.

Jen writs that it would be amazing for Eric to go to Brazil, and suggests that she would love to join him.

Eric responds by saying that Jen has papers and exams to worry about. He thinks that Jen should be focusing on graduation.

Jen admits that Eric is right, but she insists that they stay in touch while Eric is in Brazil.

Eric writes that they should get together and discuss at a movie later one. But when he shows up to the movie Jen isn’t there.

Jen apologizes, saying that she was too sick to go to the movie. She laments the fact that they missed each other and that Eric has already left for Brazil. In scenes like this one Jen and Eric resemble S. and Sola. Like S. and Sola, Jen and Eric have a deep connection, but they are rarely actually together. Their relationship is full of missed connections.
