S. notices an unusual glow coming from a distance. He soon realizes it’s another ship and decides to light his shirt on fire to get t he vessel’s attention. Jen draws a connection to a “Portuguese ship that wrecked in 1619.” On this ship was a man referred to as “the foul Sobreiro” (sobreiro is Portuguese for cork). This is possibly the same Sobreiro who wrote The Archer’s Tales which is a book that shows up several times throughout the novel and is one of the few referenced books that is real in the S. world. In theory, Sobreiro was “dumped over board” but then “the ship burned + sank not long after.” Jen makes a point of saying this took place in the Azores which is a real archipelago off the coast of Portugal. Jen sources her information from a fictitious museum on a different Portuguese archipelago called Madeira. This might prove that Sobreiro was a real man and he was much like Straka in his defiance of authority.
