S. begins to persuade Edvar VI to drink the black wine, mentioning that Edvar VI seems nervous. Edvar VI notices this waiter’s insolence and wonders if he drank the wine, is senile or imbecile.

“What if Father sees me with a black tongue?”

“You can remind him that he spent the party hiding, on the pretext of giving tours of the cellar.”

Edvar is pleased by S.’s words, which convey the truth, and drinks the wine. It is hinted earlier that S. has intended to mix a sort of truth serum, Avis veritatis, into the wine.

In the margins, Jen brings up the issue with his father. Her father said that he “might have been too hasty” in trying to commit me. And he was more interested in if Jen was going to graduation. Jen responds with
