S is canoeing on the river in this unknown world. He suddenly see two people paddling in canoes look back at him. S. is in an illusion and thinks what he sees is happening in reality. He identified one of the two people as Sola herself and the other as himself. This part of the story tries to show that the image of Sola and S. crave for her is deeply ingrained in his soul. S. is now imagining two people together and he wonders what his own self on the canoe with sola would have been identifying him to be. He wonders if his other “supposedly real” self thinks if S. himself is a mad, homeless person supposedly returned from the dead. This also shows how S. portrays himself at that time.

S loses his grip on the paddle. As the water is sweeping the paddle away, S. observes Sola and his duplicate self disappearing slowly from the view.
