Pfeifer fails to pull Zapadi’s uncle away from the detectives, while S tries to stay out of the detectives’ line of sight.
The growing tension between the Detectives and the protestors increases. Suddenly, however, S spots a familiar face in the crowd of demonstrators, a woman who is walking with purpose to the edge of the demonstration. S recognizes her as the woman from the bar in the Old quarter.

Jen and Eric’s comments
Obvious that Jen is frustrated and angry at her friends, she reveals to Eric that her friends are now ignoring her. Eric tells her it “doesn’t do any good to be so angry at them.” Jen returns to this conversation later to tell him that “Straka was just as angry at all the people who sold out the S.” Her annotation affirms that the organization, “The S,” does in fact exist.obsidian

As S. watches a Detectives setting and resetting his grip on a cudgel, he thinks, “It’s about to start. Here is the spark that starts the inferno.”
The Detective’s gesture appears three different times in “The Square.”

Jen spots Moody and Ilsa at Pronghorn Café and Ilsa appears to be wearing a piece of obsidian around her neck. Historical artifacts have been disappearing from the Archive and this piece of obsidian may be one of the stolen pieces.
