p. 299

This page begins the Interlude, and initially strays away from the story line of S. The first line of this page is a header stating, “Toccata and Fugue in Free Time,” (299). Toccata and Fugue in Free Time is a piece of music by Bach. Beneath this, it then states, “Agent #4,” thus giving context as to who this section is highlighting (299). The page then begins to describe this agent, as he is found sitting on a train surrounded by the news of the assassination of the archduke.

Within the margins, Jen and Eric discuss not only the text, but also things that are happening in their lives. Jen begins by discussing how she cannot seem to find any clues in this section of the text. Eric then says, Maybe she didn’t just call it an interlude b/c of its function in the book… maybe it’s a break from the coded-message chapters? The next comment on the page is Jen stating that she had seen another man watching her home from the bus stop. Eric attempts to quell her fears my mentioning that people wait at bus stops all the time. However, Jen still seems unconvinced. This is yet another example of how paranoid Jen is.

A bus stop most likely similar to the one Jen mentioned in her discussion of the man seen watching her home.
