The inside back page returns us to a time before digital recording of books borrowed and returned. The stamp inside the cover (sometimes a sheet pasted in) has stamped the due date in dark blue (most often a few weeks after the book was checked out) and then a red stamp (sometimes black) noting the return date. One curious note is that according to the records that date back to 1957 the book was rarely returned on time which would have likely resulted in a monetary fine. The book was last removed from the high school library in the year 2000 and as we will learn was never returned.
One might speculate that the predominance of overdue returns might reflect a younger generation’s unfamiliarity with the system itself.
