It appears as if their is some relation here between the wine and miserable death. S follows his path until he emerged in some odd “disused well” (411). This well seems almost a trap as S and Sola have “quivering breaths,” the cave walls have “notches cut into the stone” for climbing out, and Sola and S are kept company by a “skulking” character, and “the wine drowned woman” (411).
There appears to be a very strong negative feeling revolving around the wine and what it has done in this desolate well with “many thousands of restless souls” (411). In some way this wine has killed thousands unjustly.
On these next few pages, it may be important to explore the wine further and how it relates to this unsettling scene.
