The governor explains to S. that he could have decided that finding Szalomé was the most important thing he could do, but because it wasn’t he hadn’t found her. He explains that because S. spent so much time on the ship, he still knows close to nothing about Szalomé or himself. He suggests that S. look for a girl in the village, and says that that’s where he found his wife.

The governor is helping S. realize the extent to which he has chosen duty over desire by dedicating himself so much to the ship. He offers S. a cop-out with the suggestion of finding a girl similar to Szalomé in the village, but now that S.  has been empowered to explore his desires it is unlikely that he will accept such a safe proposition.

In the third round of notes Eric discovers that Desjardin’s wife, Signe Rabe, may have been Durand’s daughter. Jen attempts to find records of Rabe’s parents, but can only find records about her mother.
