Jen, on the other hand, asks why Eric didn’t change his name to his middle name instead of “Eric”, to which Eri answers:

Because my parents gave me that one, too. And because I liked “Eric” more.

This further emphasizes Eric’s rejection of his family and shows how he attempted to cut all remaining bonds. Although Eric mentions earlier in the book that he sometimes sees his family, he admits it never goes well and that he prefers not to.
