A surprising moment occurs. As S. paralyses the governor and drags him he notices something curious:

The eyes are wider-set, which seems less likely to be a change wrought by age than by the imprecision of S.’s memory”

Jen also speculates that Moody might have been bought to write things that are not true and Eric doesn’t feel like that’s the case. Eric also notes, next to the name “Pfeifer”, that

Filomela changes this. In vms’s manuscript it’s Ostrero, not Pfeifer. And the governor’s name is Španēl (the spaniard). So vms definately thought it was García Ferrara who sold out.
