This insert, which takes the form of a small card, depicts a hooded man behind a rose patch with a falcon perched on his hand. Under the man “Jean-Bernard Desjardins” is written. On the back of the card is a quote by V.M. Straka from Coriolis, his most recent novel before Ship of Theseus. It reads: “A person is no more & no less than the story of his passions and deeds.”
On pages 360 and 361, the pages between which the insert is found, Jen and Eric make no specific references to this insert, which makes it difficult to figure out who put it there. However, we can see that it was likely placed there for a reason because the quote and Ship of Theseus‘s text on these pages seem to both refer to the question of identity. While the card defines a person as the story of their “passions and deeds,” the text suggests that a person is defined by their choices. These two things overlap. A choice can be a result of one’s passions, and a deed is the result of making a choice.
