Despite S.’s attempt to communicate with the woman, she “grunts and walks away.” It is clear that all the crewmembers are going to treat him that way, including the boy form the ship earlier in the novel. Eric makes a good point about the boy, it is surpising that he isn’t more vital to the plot because “when [he] first appears in ch. 2, [he] seems like he’ll be an alter-ego for S.” Instead, S. just notes everything happening around him.
