Jen answers to Eric’s letter:

Eric, I just I wish That’s so

OK – I don’t know how to respond. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

Eric?

Eric doesn’t answer, he continues with other notes but doesn’t let his story interfere with the way Jen sees him or acts towards him.

In pencil notes that the chapter title “A Sleeping Dog” is strange and Jen states the possibility of it being a guide to a code. After not being able to crack it, Eric supposes that FXC was trying to make it “overt enough” for VMS to understand it but encripted enough for other not to.

In Ship of Theseus, S. has just escaped from the detectives and is aboard the ship once again, which is strange because he had seen its destruction in the storm.

Eric also notes in pencil that the

ship keeps changing + change is disorienting

to which Jen replies,

Yes, it is.

There small interaction is interesting because Eric wrote his note when he was in high school and a lot was changing in his life. As he explained in his letter, he had fought with is parents and was using Straka’s books as an escape. Whreas Jen writes her response as a college student, when everything is changing for her (end of relationship, disliking her major, braking away from parent’s expectations).
