After a long night in front of the campfire, the group decides to get some sleep. They each take turns standing watch, and when it is S.’s turn to take over from Ostrero he realizes how much Ostrero has had to give up in order to save himself, and gives him a pat on the back as they pass.
In a dialogue of their second round of notes, Eric and Jen talk about meeting up for the first time:
Let’s meet before I leave.
Why now?
I don’t know. Has to do w/ going away.
Then why didn’t we do it before Paris?
I don’t know. Maybe I was wrapped up in the idea that it was my work + I had to do it. At some point-and I just realized this-this started feeling like it’s our project. It feels more important to be together-Really be together…
It was important before. And it hurt when you bailed.
I never said I was good at this. I’m only good at being in my own little world (+sometimes I’m not even very good at that). Just tell me where + when.
Varsity, Saturday night. 9:30 showing of Notorious. Back row, center. I’ll get there early and save a seat.
I’ll be there.
Eric’s decision to let Jen in on such an important and personal project suggests a level of trust that even people who know each other can have a difficult time reaching. It may be a bit too early to call it love, but this strongly suggests that Eric is willing to let Jen into his life to a degree that very few others (if anyone) have achieved. Jen seems to have been waiting for this moment, considering the way she felt when Eric stood her up, and seems more than willing to reciprocate Eric’s level of trust.
