S and Corbeau continue their conversation, with Corbeau confirming without a doubt that she is with Stenfalk. As they walk, the fire spreads, and they break character for a moment to lament the fact that people may be dying. This prompts an interesting discussion about how Vevoda and similar people inherently have an edge in any battle, since they are unburdened by morals that hold back those who fight for justice. Surely this is Straka voicing his thoughts on the difficulties his movement faces when confronting the huge corporations that he so despises.

In the margins, Jen underlines a section about fire and writes that the fire “got really close to the hotel” where she was staying (133). Written in pink and thus late in the marginal chronology, this reveals that Jen is being personally targeted by someone, though the exact identity of the perpetrator is unclear. Eric notes that “It could be some punk that Moody’s paying to do things to scare you,” (133) His use of the word “punk” as opposed to something more serious, and “scare” instead of something more violent, implies that he doesn’t consider that to be a legitimate threat. Jen strongly disagrees.

“Like that isn’t scary itself? I CAN’T STAY HERE. AND I DONT HAVE ANYWHERE TO GO.”
