This page begins to detail the journey of S. and his journey on the ship to the house of Vévoda. The narrator describes that the ship is traveling through fog, which then sparks a footnote from FXC highlighting Straka’s choice of words. She then references essayist Norman Bergen, and human’s reactions to evil. The text continues explaining the current condition of the ship, and it then mentions an old white haired sailor that was helping Sola.
Norman Bergen, the man mentioned in the footnote, does not actually exist. In fact, Norman Bergen is a record producer that was born in 1945. However, within the margins Eric, in response to Jen’s initial comment about the number of footnotes in this chapter, states, “Bergen existed, that’s what he wrote + that’s where he wrote it.“ Evidently, within the world of Straka, Jen and Eric, Bergen was a real person. Furthermore, within the margins Eric asks Jen if she has a passport, hinting that they may be planning an international trip together.
Furthermore, Jen references the text that explains what the old man on the boat looks like, and she states that this description perfectly fits what Summersby in the 1940s looked like. Summersby, as we know from his first mention in the novel on Page 22, was a potential Straka, so the fact that a character in the novel looked like him could be a hint towards his involvement. This notice then leads to the discussion of other potential members of the S, such as Signe and Desjardins, and Vaclav.
