S is in a tavern, which is a low brick building on the corner of two streets. When he sees the symbol of S on a brick, the same one he had on the paper in his pocket, he feels a sense of fate guiding his to that place. The scene in the tavern is nasty. The first paragraph describes this mysterious man in the wet overcoat and his interaction with the bartender. The use of the phrase “sonofabitch” as a single word is also noteworthy of Straka’s style and choice of wordplay. The man is portryed as one who has been on a long journey and is observant of the surrounding of the tavern, which consists of needy “sonofabitches”
