On page 11 S. hears for the first time the voices that haunt him at various points throughout the novel. This could potentially be related to Bolton’s theory argument that Straka was schizophrenic noted by Eric on page vii of the foreword.
Eric compares, in a note in pencil, Ship of Theseus with Miracle At Braxenholm. He says,
cf. ch. 6 in brax. (huge celebration of the city’s first streetlights). Image echoed here, but subverted.
Interestingly, in SOT, instead of celebrating the streetlights, three boys throw rocks at them and shatter their glass.
Page 11 also gives the reader a hint on Jen and Eric’s emotional state. Eric underlines in pencil the sentence “he is not to be taken seriously; he is to be scoffed that and then forgotten.” Jen then asks him in a note,
Did you flag this because you think that’s how Moody sees you?
You’re good.
No – just dealing with similar stuff.
This conversation essentially shows how they are both having trouble in similar forms and going through hard times. Also, it shows that they understand each other to a certain extent even though they don’t know each other.
