Brendan Owens, the Digital media Tutor Supervisor, forwarded this article to me. I am not sure which is more interesting, that we could be moving away from Google as the primary search resource, or that Popular Mechanics has taken an interest in digital technologies. Sign of the times.

Interesting article. I’m not sure whether we are really moving toward a social-network organized internet search paradigm, since so many people seem to be actively uncomfortable with the extent to which facebook has become a kind of uber-networking site. I know that I would probably choose not to use any such search engine…somehow Google has an aura of an objective gateway, even though it of course uses your previous searches to refine its results. I think it’s more likely that Google will add this kind of functionality to its normal web search, without users really even knowing about it. Raises interesting privacy issues, and I think it’s an area that deserves some further discussion.
