I work weekdays at Armstrong Library. My main responsibility is student supervisor. But I also coordinate the lending of Ill's from the science library. I can also be found occassionally at Main LIbrary covering the circulation desk or at the information desk.

Magnetic media – Reminder

An important reminder to all students who work at any circulation desk.    Older media, such as VHS tapes, and cassette tapes are vulnerable to magnets.    Our desensitizing equipment have magnets in them.   If any older media comes in contact with these magnets they will be erased.   Also magnetic strips in credit cards, IDs and floppy disks are vulnerable to magnets, so keep all these away from the desensitizers.   Main students this includes the check in machine.

Closings at Armstrong

Over the last few days  I’ve  noticed while opening that several closing procedures are not being taken care of.    I realize it’s been busy, but we need to be utilizing the 3 hours of the closing shifts better.    Below are a few reminders on closing items that are not being done!

  • shutting off all copiers in the copier alcove.
  • During the three hour closing shift students need to take turns sweeping the library.  I’m finding un-shelved books each morning I open.
  • pick up items left on carrels, and around the library.
  • put paper in the printers!
  • shelve everything that needs shelving.

Timesheet responsibilities

Each pay period I end up having timesheets submitted late (the deadline is noon on the Mondays following the end of a pay period).   I’m  also finding errors each pay period, which is a result of waiting until the last day to submit time.     I want to remind everyone that being responsible for your time sheet is just as much a part of job as being puntual.    To this end you should be entering your time each shift you work, and then on the last day you work in each pay period you simply submit the time sheet.    I’ll be monitoring timesheets each day to see that this is actually happening.   Any questions let me know.

Scanner computer in Armstrong 204 (microforms)

FYI,  the computer in room 204 with the scanner attached is once again having problems allowing patrons to log on.     It has been reported to the  help desk, and they are looking into solutions.   For now have students follow the instruction on  the sheet posted on the wall to log in.   Let me know if you have any questions.

Circ work comes first

I want to remind everyone that library work comes before personal work.

We’ve been getting a higher number of patrons claiming an overdue item was returned to the circulation desk,  and not checked in.   I’ve followed up on several of these e-mails (time I could be using for other tasks.) and indeed the item was in the reserve area and not checked in.    Unfortunately, what this means is that personal work at the circulation desk is taking too much priority over circulation work.    I want to remind everyone that library work comes before personal work.      Secondly, I’m seeing too many reserves left sitting on the circulation desk and not checked in, this is a direct cause of improper check-in.   Remember that all returns are to be checked in promptly, as this is your responsibility as  a circulation assistant.

Compact shelving section not working at Armstrong.

Armstrong has a section of compact shelving that is not working properly, i.e. it trips the “aisle in use light” and will not clear  (open).    Usually we use the over-ride key but this is not working well.   The section is the last four aisles of the periodicals compact shelving near the center of the stacks, call number QH 573 to the TD’s.   Please if someone needs to get into this section get a supervisor or if it’s at night they’ll have to wait until morning.   Get their name and the call number of the book they need , and a supervisor will retrieve it.   I’ll keep you up to date as to when it will be fixed.

Plotter use at Armstrong

Main Library’s plotter is still down and won’t be up before next week.     We’ll continue to be busy printing posters for the time being.    Please refer questions students have to Dave Guertin (x3143) room 506 Bi-Hall.   If  Dave is unavailable they can try contacting Mack Roark (x2328) room 214 Main Library.    Please also keep an eye on the plotter, and don’t let anyone but LIS staff and those on the list in 209 work on or change the paper.
