Color Printing

A reminder: while Main and Armstrong have color copiers, Main is the only branch with color printing. The color printer in Main is attached to only one computer, a Mac desktop located along the outside wall of the Media Lab. Users need to use that computer specifically in order to print in color. One often-used method is to email the item which needs to be printed to themselves, then open their email at that specific computer. If any of the ink cartridges are out, users should get more ink from the Helpdesk.

Book Sale July 7 – 12

Select Japanese collection books will be on sale from July 7-12 in the Main Library Atrium. These books are chiefly duplicates of items already in the collection and may well be of interest to individuals. The Main Circ Desk will be the sale point for this book sale, starting July 7th.

Service Animals for LS

Please be aware that we may see service animals in the libraries.
The need for service animals is not always apparent or obvious.
Service animals may accompany one time visitors or they may be here to assist summer students, faculty or staff.
Service animals are trained to be in areas such as classrooms, dining halls, libraries, dorms etc., though not all service animals are approved/registered for indoor campus public use areas.

Currently there is only one guide dog on campus that should be allowed in the libraries.

If students are entering the library with what they claim is a service animal, they should be in touch with Jodi Litchfield. If they are faculty or staff, they should contact Laura Carotenuto in Human Resources.

In addition, please feel free to direct any concerns or questions about service animals to Elin.
Thanks!

Guest Printing and Print Release Update

From Mary Backus, Director of User Services
I wanted to let you know that as of today (June 8), guests (Those who do not have a Middlebury network/email account) will be required to pay for printing in the library. They can purchase pay cards in the Wilson Cafe, as well as other locations, for $5.00. There is a brochure available at the Information Desk (and at Circ) which will guide guests through the process. Please review the brochure at the beginning of your next shift. I would suggest that whenever someone asks for the Guest password, ask them if they will need to print, and explain that there is a new policy and give them a copy of the brochure. You should also read the details of the procedures they will need to follow in this documentation:

http://www.middlebury.edu/academics/lis/help/helpdesk/documentation/printing/win/

When you have to answer questions about the new policy, here are the highlights to help you answer them:

Guests continue to be welcomed at the library, but because of rising costs and environmental efforts, PaperCut has been instituted.
This is for black & white only. Main Street Stationary and UPS Store should be suggested for color printing.
For this purpose, guests are those who are not current student, faculty, and staff such as (but not limited to) campus visitors, alumni, guest lecturers, and family members.
This applies to the public printers at the libraries only.

At the same time, LIS has rolled out Print Release Stations for all public printers on campus.
The release stations are simply a tool that requires confirmation of a print job at a public printer allowing the user to have better control over where and when they print:
Reduce printing of unnecessary and duplicate pages
Free-up printers as a result of timely and confirmed printing

Students, faculty, staff, and guests who print on the campus’ public printers will be required to acknowledge and release their print jobs at these stations within two hours of queuing.
Of course, print release will not be required at departmental or personal printers.
Thank you for helping to support this new policy, and if you have any questions or problems, please let me know.
Mary

Front Door Troubleshooting Tips

From Joseph:

Hi Library Circulation folks!

As you know we’ve had continuing problems with the front doors at the front of the library not unlocking properly. A few things to keep in mind as you cope with this problem–

– sometimes when the the program unlocks the doors the doors themselves do not unlock. when this happens the first thing to try is to exit the problem door using the crash bar on the inside. The crash bar sometimes pushes the locking pin up into the door and then it stays unlocked.

– if you push the door open with the crash bar and it’s still locked when the door is shut, then call Public Safety and ask them to send the doors through their lock and unlock cycle again.. then go back to step one and try the crash bar trick

– if the doors still don’t unlock, please put a sign on the outside of the doors that says “please use other door” and let me know about the problem. If you can’t reach me or if I’m away, then please send an email to both Public Safety and Facilities Services telling them of the problem, cc’ing me so that I know about it.

The above process is for when the doors have unlocked at the expected time but a few of the doors aren’t working right. If opening time has come and gone and all of the doors are still locked, that’s likely a programming problem not a hardware problem. When that happens please call Public Safety and ask them to unlock the doors and send me an email so I know about the glitch.

Thanks!!

-Joseph

Yellow Cables – Can They Be Saved?

The Yellow Cable Program is rapidly drawing its last breath!
Please pass the word to return the yellow cables to the bins at the Circ Desks so that we can resuscitate this program.
Unless we see an immediate return to SHARING the yellow Ethernet cables, the program will have to end.

Please refer users to the bookstore to purchase their own cables. Available for about $5.

Print Release in Main LIB242

LIS has undertaken a project to implement print management for all public printers.
LIB242 IS A TEST ZONE FOR PRINT RELEASE FOR 1 WEEK
During this test period students, faculty and staff can log in with their username and password to release print jobs sent to the printers in Lib242.
Guest users can log in with the daily pclab username and password to print.
The computers in 242 are dedicated to print release and cannot be used for other purposes during this test.

What is a print release station?
A print release station allows users (faculty, staff, students, and guests) to release their print jobs to the printers rather than use the current configuration of automatically printing jobs to the printers.

Why install a print release station?
A print release station should reduce the number of unnecessary or duplicate print jobs from being printed, give the user greater control over their printing, and increase print availability.

How does a print release station work?
When a user sends a document to the printer, it queues on the print release station. The user must log into the print release station using their Middlebury username and password to view jobs they submitted. The user sees only the documents that they sent to the printer and they can release or cancel the print request.

Please try out the new stations and provide your feedback. Please also record any and all comments, questions, suggestions etc. on the notepad at the Circ desk. There are also stickies available in 242 for writing comments.

Printers without release stations are available on the 3rd floor of the Main Library (LIB303) or the lower level of the Main Library (LIB142).
Please direct all printing from Main Level walk-up stations to the upper and lower level printers.

If you experience problems or you are notified of problems with the print release stations during the testing, please contact the Helpdesk.
