Processing of NExpress returns at the Circ Desk

Seems this week we’ve had a lot of ILL carts floating in and out of Circ. I like the idea of Circ checking in NExpress returns, it seems to fit well with what we do at Circ. If we continue this process, it would be great to have clear signage on the carts, as we handle a lot of books and the books need to end up in the right place!

Override Messages in Mill Circ

Just a friendly reminder to ALWAYS carefully read and pay attention to the text on pop-up messages when scanning borrower ID’s and item barcodes at check-in and check-out. The system is very smart – and is set up to alert you to borrowing blocks, non-circulating rules, system limits, etc.
NEVER override without first reading the message and understanding the implications. Please ask for clarification if you do not understand what the message means.
Thanks. 🙂

Inventory of Media Services equipment loaned to each LS this summer

Please see below for a list of the Media Services equipment that has been loaned to each Language School this summer. This will come in handy when the Circ Desk equipment pool becomes depleted. We can refer LS borrowers back to their Technology Assistants in their program to see if any of this equipment is available. Here’s the list:

LCD projectors: All schools have 2 except for French (they requested only one)

Digital cameras: All have 1

Mini-DV camcorders and tripods: All have at least 1 (exceptions are German, Italian, and Japanese: they have two)

Cassette recorders:  Hebrew has 4,  German 1, Portuguese 5, Russian 14, Chinese 7 (Media Services has more if needed)

Boomboxes: Hebrew has 4, German 7, Portuguese 7, Spanish 9, Italian 5,  French 3, Japanese 2,  Russian 11, Chinese 12 (Media Services has more if needed)

Party systems: All have 1 except for Hebrew and French (Media Services has none left)

Hebrew keyboards now available for loan

Please note that we are now circulating seven Hebrew keyboards from the Main Circ Desk. This is in addition to the five English keyboards that have been in our equipment pool for the past year. All are located in the storage unit between Kellam and Doreen’s offices. Keyboards have a four-hour loan period, but we are happy to extend the loan as needed, and as supply allows.

Service Animals for LS

Please be aware that we may see service animals in the libraries.
The need for service animals is not always apparent or obvious.
Service animals may accompany one time visitors or they may be here to assist summer students, faculty or staff.
Service animals are trained to be in areas such as classrooms, dining halls, libraries, dorms etc., though not all service animals are approved/registered for indoor campus public use areas.

Currently there is only one guide dog on campus that should be allowed in the libraries.

If students are entering the library with what they claim is a service animal, they should be in touch with Jodi Litchfield. If they are faculty or staff, they should contact Laura Carotenuto in Human Resources.

In addition, please feel free to direct any concerns or questions about service animals to Elin.
Thanks!

Guest Borrowing

Please refer questions about guest borrowing privileges to Elin.

During the summer we often have visitors and staff on campus who may not be in the library borrower database.
Please review the guest borrowing guidelines.
Non-Midd student research assistants are not eligible for Midd ID’s, but are eligible for borrowing privileges. Please refer them to Main.
Main Library supervisors – please create a library card and borrowing account – no guest application form needed – please double check -they may be in the borrower data base.
In addition to name, address, email, please include Midd ID number, and in the note field include home institution, and sponsoring Midd faculty.
Patron type 80 – staff
Set the expiration date for their last date of employment.

9-week Language Schools begin Fri 6/12

The Language Schools summer session started on 6/5 in Mills California and will officially begin on the Middlebury campus tomorrow 6/12, with the arrival of the 9-week Language Schools.

A few reminders:

Full summer hours resume at Main on Fri 6/12, and at Music and Armstrong on Monday 6/15.

Midd ID’s are required to borrow.
Midd ID’s are often not issued to LS students, staff and faculty right away. A photo ID (license or passport) can be substituted if necessary to allow borrowing. NOTE! Be sure to double check that you are in the right borrower record – verify that first and last name match exactly what is listed on the photo ID.

Please respect the Language Pledge in all aspects of your front desk work. If the you speak the language of the person you are assisting, please feel free to use that in your interactions. English is allowed to transact business, but please minimize any casual visiting in English.
The Language Pledge is a formal commitment on the part of all LS students to speak, listen, read, and write the language of study as the only means of communication for the session.

Many thanks for all your great help.
