Student supervision
Dee Gilbert joined us for the meeting. Using her new handbook as a guide, we reviewed some policies for hiring students. A few highlights:
Job description – use plain, clear English and list essential functions (LIS job descriptions are way too wordy). OK to use similar job descriptions for Circ Services, tweaked a bit for branches.
Applications – seems Circ Services is not consistent with using the same application. We should use the on-line Student Employment application (example: Circulation Services\Student Assistants-Circulation Services\Student Worker Handbook and Procedures\Online application)
Interviewing – be prepared, ask open ended questions, don’t go by schedule availability alone when you interview students. Clearly explain job responsibilities, expectations, pay and schedules
Hiring – ask to see student employment card, provide training, review Banner time entry. No need to have students sign contract; offer confidentially agreement instead (located: Circulation Services\Student Assistants-Circulation Services\Student Worker Handbook and Procedures- Docs)
Strategies for success – set a good example, communicate expectations, give consistent and appropriate feedback
Training – give clear expectations. Suggestions: create training chart and organize regular staff meetings
Summer hires – Planning is in the works. Internships and LS financial aid notification dates out of our hands. Dee announced 2009 summer student employees will be charged $50 weekly meal plan. Options for dining times, details to work out.
