Post LS-wrap up with the students

Suggestions:
1. Do more education of summer students about printing, possibly add a “how to print” sheet to their arrival packet. (Dan will bring this up with the User Services Managers)
2. If the info desk is still in place, maybe posting a tech student there to respond to printing questions for the first couple weeks. (and this)
3. Have tech students in the helpdesk area until 12am. (due to budget issues, I doubt this will be feasible, but I will mention it)
4. Fill paper trays at the beginning of each tech shift to avoid those issues all together. (Dan will let Joe know)
5. Have cafe’ open at night Sun-Thur. (This isn’t up to us…)
6. Have librarians available 5pm-7pm. (Numbers don’t justify this, but we will continue to keep track)
7. Better signage for reference and tech services (can’t really see the signs when entering the library) (Dan will talk to Joseph about this)
8. Armstrong would like more dongles and two mac computers for their branch. (They will be getting more shortly)
9. Need to make a new cheat sheet for who reserves which rooms in the library. (Dan is following up)
10. Audio books shelved together (like the Vermont and Faculty Author sections) (Dan has asked Rebekah if this is possible)
11. Clean the bathrooms more, main and upper get very dirty. (Kim contacted facilities)
12. Make up tip postcards to hand out at the beginning of language school about pertinent info. (Go for it!)

Thanks everyone for your input and for a great summer!

Compact shelving deactivated

The compact shelving in the center section of the main floor of Davis has been deactivated as it is not sensing people in the aisle. So rather than squish someone inadvertently, we have shut down the units and put up signs indicating that patrons should come to the desk for access to those shelves.

No more recalls on browsing books

After some feedback from patrons, I have changed the loan rule on Browsing books to not allow recalls. You can still place a hold, but the original patron will still have the full 28 days to return the item. The hold will prevent renewals, as always.

Compact shelves broken

The compact shelves on the main level are broken and we have shut them off. If someone needs a book from that section, there are signs for them to either email circ or come to the desk and fill out a request slip. The slips are on the cart next to Janine’s desk. We will retrieve books in the morning and afternoon and email the patrons as soon as they are available. Circ staff, please put the books on hold for the patron and email them directly.

New first aid kit for Davis

The official location for the emergency first-aid kit at Circ is now on top of the AED machine attached to the wall just to the right as you enter LIB250. If the official emergency first-aid kit is used in an emergency, please notify Joseph Watson so he can request replacement supplies from the College’s Health and Safety Officer.

The first-aid kits that were above the sink have been removed and replaced with an unofficial box that contains miscellaneous small supplies that can be used for minor cuts, etc., as needed on a non-emergency basis. If these unofficial misc. supplies run low please ask Doreen to get some more. (The four small kits that were above the sink were removed because it is important to keep the official kits well stocked with fresh supplies, and having so many assorted kits makes that task overly complicated. We also shouldn’t give anyone the impression that it’s OK to dip into a first-aid kit for paper cut.)

Billing inquiries

There have been a a few instances recently of patrons who have been billed asking about the status of their accounts. When I move charges to their college accounts, I remove those charges in Millennium, so it appears as if their accounts are clear. But telling them their account is clear is misleading when they then have a bill show up on their college account. So please direct all billing inquiries to a supervisor. (Supervisors, please check in the patron record for a note about charges moved to college account.)

Students borrowing conference phones

In the past few weeks Telephone services has received urgent calls from students who have borrowed a speakerphone to place a toll call. Unfortunately, they don’t have a TAC to do so. Students do not receive toll, long distance access at the college. So, for these special purposes, whomever is arranging the loan should let the student know that:

• they may use the phone to place a toll-free call
• receive incoming calls
• use a calling card
• or receive a TAC from the faculty member they’re working with.
