Weekly Report 22 Oct 08

US Leader Weekly Report –
Date: 22 October 2008
Name: Elin Waagen – Workgroups: Circulation, Stacks, Reserves

Highlights: (Progress towards Goals, accomplishments)
• Lots of October birthdays!
Lots of homecoming related visitors on the weekend
• Web 2.Opportunity workshop on 10/21
• Blogging – hands on sharing/blogging at 2 circ meetings
• Equipment – Met with Ethan Murphy, Media Production Specialist (for FMMC)
• Reserves – Covering for Reserves in Coordinators absence – very busy! Eres and books and media all still flowing in for Reserves
• Stacks – over the hump: we’ve crossed the half-mark of phase one of the shifting project
• Wiki – planning for layout
• Music – configured Music barcode scanner to not read UPC’s
• Music – Heavy NExpress activity
• Completed EReserve project – returning scanned docs to faculty
• Testing Dragon voice recognition software
• Armstrong – busy facility activity; troubleshooting computers, movable stacks, printers etc.
• Main – Browsing DVD’s shelf expansion and shift
• Main – Opening carrels to seniors without theses
• Main – Locker sweep
• Training meeting for approx 23 students
• Consolidating lost and found locations at Main – based on student employee feedback
• Armstrong – ILL, NExpress, Rapid increase daily – lots of processing going on by all
• Space – Armstrong moving forward with more space improvements
• Scheduling/staffing – Phil returns this week from LOA
• Student Employees – set up blog pages for updates, memo’s etc.; now required reading at beginning of shifts; illness at Armstrong and Main Stacks
• Created new desktop background for circ front desk computers with links to blog, desktop stats, etc.
• Workshops etc. – completed Element K tutorial on Excel – 64 modules
• Self-check service call to adjust scanner beam
• Eco bags arrived – next week – promotion and roll-out
• Tweaking screening media and repair workflow

Challenges:

• Self-check – barcode placement on oversize/extra wide books cannot be read by scanner
• Yellow cable program teetering on the brink of oblivion due to most cables not returning (the cable program has been in effect since March 2007). Planning to reassess next week, inventory cables on carrels and at Circ
• PC FW drives in very high demand — our current supply of 10 does not seem to be consistently meeting demand this semester
• Laptop loaner left unattended by borrower on thesis carrel
• Fewer printer problems. The number one strongly voiced complaint from students seems to be “isn’t there a way to note when printers are off line so items won’t be sent to the big black hole”
• False gate alarms
• Armstrong experiencing some server issues as printer sometimes will not receive any jobs
• Error reports on disc scan
• FMP issues – multiple titles for single screening; access and view
• Music – Circ computer had virus, had to be re-imaged. Still working out the bugs and reconfiguring new image.

  1. Re: “Created new desktop background for circ front desk computers with links to blog, desktop stats, etc.”

-Is the new desktop background in effect now? If so, can someone give me a tutorial? I’m not finding the shortcut to the blog.

  2. Good question, Kellam. I can’t see the new desktop background at the circ desk computers.

P.S. If you post a comment on a blog posting, there is no easy way to keep up to date with the comments unless you happen to notice there is a “comment” when you are looking through the postings, correct? On the calendar the date is “bolded” when a new posting appears, but not when comments are entered, correct?

    Thanks!

  3. Steve and Dan will update the Main computers soon.

You can subscribe to a feed reader and get updates to the blog and to comments on posts – check with the Media Lab tutors!

    Thanks,
    Elin
