FYI 15 August 2008

Happy End of Term!
And thanks for a great summer session! I know we are all looking forward to some much deserved time off and/or a change of pace.

Please email me your thoughts about Summer 08. How did things go? What were the big issues? What went well? What can we do better?

Double check library hours posted on the web and alert me to errors, questions. A reminder that Maiin is closed 8/25: turns out MBH will also have a water shut down – stay tuned for Arm hours update.

Update work schedules on Outlook – are you working 8/25 or 9/1?

Joseph is developing a wiki for facility related issues. Please see https://mediawiki.middlebury.edu/wiki/LIS/Facilities_Issues%3B_main_lib

Please review and edit the intersession checklist on the wiki so that we have a working document that reflects actual activity at all branches for the upcoming intersession period

Wiki
Let me know if you’d like to take “ownership” of a specific page to develop the documentation on the wiki.
Remember to set up your profile and click on “watch page” so that you are alerted to any updates to documentation and procedures.

Periodicals
Current periodicals do not circulate
To ensure the availability of collections it is vital that current issues of periodicals remain in the building
If issues are lost or damaged, trying to replace them for binding is a time-consuming and expensive process–especially in the case of titles published abroad
Often, it is impossible to replace issues at any price, which means our holdings of the titles involved will be forever incomplete
It is our responsibility to assure that our holdings are as complete as possible for the benefit of our users, both current and future
This imperative should preclude the circulation of current-periodical issues
If an exception is to be made, the Serials department urges that it be done only under the most unusual of circumstances, and because of an exceedingly compelling need, not for reasons of mere personal preference or convenience
A color copier is available if needed

Laptops and saving work
Advise student/4-hour laptop users to save work on Tigercat, or on a thumb drive of their own (thumb drives can be purchased at the College Store), or to email the document to themselves. In fact, it doesn’t hurt to advise them to do more than one of those things. If you’re unsure about any computer question, please direct them to the Helpdesk. FYI – the “T drive” on a library computer is for “Thawspace” – not Tigercat! The T-drive is where the reimaging files are saved for each time the computer boots up – work saved to the T-drive will be LOST.

Contacting Digital Media Tutors
The preferred method for patrons to communicate questions to the Digital Media Tutors (apart from speaking to them in person) is to use their general email address:
DigitalMediaTutors@middlebury.edu

End of Term Reserve reminders
Summer faculty will be stopping by to pick up personal items (media, books and reprints) they put on reserve for the summer:
Personal items (media and books) have bright green spine label, normally catalogues under faculty’s last name.
Reprints (filed in reprint) return only photocopy, not the folder containing the reprint
Print out (or write down) the call number of the item(s) they are taking, and place list on “reserves processing shelf”.
Check to be sure you have given them all their items (search course reserves in MIDCAT, under faculty name or course number)
Return them to faculty….

Thanks!
Have a great weekend!
