To Those who Hate on Twitter…

What’s with the beef?

Sure, Twitter is one more reason for people to be too absorbed in their Blackberrys and Iphones to have real conversations with you, but here’s the thing. Social media is taking over the world by storm. Jobs are looking for applicants who know how to tweet. They want employees who know what a trending topic is. The U.S., apparently, is attempting to utilize Twitter to engage North Korea in diplomatic negotiations.

Midd Kids are Special #1

What’s so great about a liberal arts education? Every Midd Kid asks this question especially during their senior year when they see job posts that specifically seek out undergraduate students with a communications or business major. Well Midd Kid, let me answer your question.

WRITING SKILLS. Think about the 2 CW courses that we are required to take in order to graduate. Remember your FYS and how you had to write and rewrite essays during your first months at Midd? What about all those papers you have to write for class? Correct me if I’m wrong but, thinking back on my 24 classes (Chinese included), each class required some sort of writing, and each professor had their own specific writing preferences that Midd Kids had to cater to. Middlebury basically gives you 4 years to seriously hone those writing skills that businesses want!

Don’t believe me? Just ask Dalya F. Massachi from OpportunityKnocks.org.

Massachi wrote: Employers know that writing well will help you succeed in fundraising, marketing/outreach, advocacy, project management, administration, etc. No matter if you’re at the entry level or in senior management, strong writing skills are critical if you want to capture the interest and attention of your constituents and prospective donors. Virtually everyone working in the nonprofit sector has to do some writing at some point. And the better you can do that, the deeper and broader your impact will be. Your organization may produce great work or come up with outstanding ideas, but if you present those achievements or thoughts poorly they will not get very far.

Midd Kid, you are special. There are people out there who want you.

Investment Bank Cover Letter Example

Since a resume always goes hand-in-hand with cover letters…

By Andrea Rice
Your cover letter is your elevator pitch tailored to the specific position and company you’re targeting. They are not always required, but if you plan on sending one, make sure it is concise and highlights key selling points. A poorly worded cover letter can knock you out of being considered.

5 Ways to Make Your Investment Banking Resume Stand Out

Seniors! Your favorite GottaMentor Andrea Rice has your back once again.

By Andrea Rice
1. Offer proof that you can work under pressure
If you’re looking for a job that allows you to make plans to meet with friends and date during the week, this isn’t it. You can expect to work 12 -20 hours a day week after week with a smile, faked if need be, on your face. To sustain that pace for any period of time requires stamina and an ability to perform in a high-pressure environment.

Investment Banking vs Consulting vs Marketing

By Andrea Rice (GottaMentor)

Within Investment Banking, I’ve worked in both corporate finance and equity research. I also spent several years doing management consulting. I get asked by people looking at consulting, finance, and marketing how they should figure out what`s right for them, so here are my thoughts.

Top 10 Mistakes Midd Kids Make on their Resumes

top-ten-blue-300x299

  1. TYPOS/Grammar mistakes:
    • Even in the SAT’s, the spelling of your name is worth 200 points.
    • This may not be an essay, but tense switch from past to present is still frowned upon.
  2. Not including GPA:
    • If it is higher than 3.0, put it in! Otherwise, employer will presume it is lower.
    • Data points are essential. Employers like numbers.
  3. Including too much high school info:
    • It has been 4 years. There must be other things to write about.
    • Only include it if:
      • High school has a high name recognition
      • Job/internship is in that local area
      • Awesome GPA/leadership experience
  4. Using weak verbs
    • “Worked with” is not as strong as “organized” or “managed”
  5. Assuming that one resume fits all
    • Even if you are applying to jobs in just one specific field, depending on the employer, some experiences are more valuable than others.  Continue reading

Bikini check, Banana Hammock check, Business Card…double check.

lemonade

Summer is ready to hit us in the face, so we have to be prepared!

Summer means:
1. Sunbathing on the beach.
2. Lemonade stands on every corner.
3. Refreshing Sprite commercials.
4. Big, bright polka dots all over dresses, accessories, and tops.
5. BUSINESS

Dear Class of 2010,
It has been a pleasure writing to you all. I hope that this blog, dedicated to helping you with your job search process, senior life, etc., has at least entertained you, if not helped you this year. Now it is time to bid you adieu with your last piece of advice. (Don’t cry! I’ll see you on the booze cruise.)

Dear Class of 2010.5, 2011,
GET YOUR GAME FACE ON! We are starting things a bit early around here because…GUESS WHAT?!…the seniors (yes the CLASS OF 2010) advise you to do so. So, consider this your first bit of advice.

MAKE A BUSINESS CARD FOR YOURSELF!
Don’t miss an opportunity to network this summer. There were so many times in the past when I’d look over at the USC Marshall School of Business student exchanging business cards and becoming chummy with the person I WANTED TO CONNECT TO thinking, “WHERE DO I GET A PEN AROUND HERE?!” When I got the chance to talk to this person, I had to write down my name and information…on a piece of napkin. Great first impression! $25 says that person lost that sad, little piece of napkin because I never heard from him again. (Oh, and business cards are like trading cards…if you don’t give one, there’s a chance that you won’t get one.)

I blamed Middlebury until I saw this: http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/news/communications/identity/stationery

So…it was my fault.
I was not prepared.
DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!

For you “always prepared” folks, check out my previous post on business card etiquette.

Do you have your “Elevator Speech”?

200487893-001

By The Wise Job Search

Imagine you walk into an office building for an appointment. You’re looking sharp because you’re on your way to a meeting with a recruiter on the 22nd floor. You step onto the elevator, and you notice someone that you used to live next door to in the past, but haven’t seen in years. You say “Hi” to each other, and they ask what you’re doing there. You say you’re meeting a recruiter. They say “Oh, I didn’t know you’re looking for a job… how can I help? what are you looking for?”

You now have approximately 30 seconds to tell them what you’re looking for, and give them some ideas of how they can help before the elevator door opens and either you, or they, have to step off and they’re gone!

Are you ready?

Forget about Sex – Let’s Talk about Hair

By Frances Cole Jones

frances

For those of you scratching your heads (Sorry, I’m in a punning kind of mood) at the title—and the topic—of this piece, here’s a newsflash: many, many people spend as much (or more) time thinking about how they’re going to wear their hair at their presentation as they do thinking about what they’re going to say at their presentation.

(And while I will admit the preponderance of these conversations tend to be with women, I have had in-depth hair conversations with my male clients, too.)

My trouble is that I can think of few people in the world less qualified to talk about hair than myself. Mine mystifies me, which is why I outsourced the whole project to my wonderful stylist, Dickey, and why I sat down with him recently to get the answers to some of your most pressing questions:

Why is this Annenberg speaker such a big deal?
These three events are organized by Elise Hanks ’11.5, Ambassador for the Partnership for Public Service, with support from CSO.  Middlebury is honored to have Elise on campus, one of only 30 schools in the country to have such a position.  For more information, visit www.makingthedifference.org and www.methanetomarkets.org

The Partnership for Public Service’s Annenberg Speakers Bureau connects young Americans to the organization that connects all Americans—our federal government.  By facilitating opportunities for dynamic federal employees to speak to key audiences and creating a virtual mentors network, the Speakers Bureau educates students about the many opportunities available to them in federal government and inspires a new generation to serve.

Knowledge Gap about Government
Only three percent of our federal workforce is under the age of 25. The shortage of talented young workers is costing our government new ideas and new energy that are critical to its effectiveness.  To close this knowledge gap, young people need a better understanding of how government affects our

lives every day and how they can contribute to some of the most pressing challenges the nation faces—making a difference on a national and global level.

4 New Job-Search Trends

Online1

By Brigitte Yuille

Job seekers may have noticed that job boards and the traditional résumé just aren’t cutting it these days. Recruiters and employers are choosing to post jobs online at sites such as LinkedIn and Craigslist. The online option has become a cheaper alternative to the job boards because they are free.

Recruiters and employers have also become more tech-savvy and whizzes at social networking. The traditional résumé is no longer the first impression. By the time a recruiter or employer sees it they may have already Googled the job seeker’s name and/or looked them up on LinkedIn and Facebook in search of their online profile.

Most likely, this impromptu background check occurred on their mobile phone. Welcome to the digital age. Here’s a look at four of the latest job searching trends and ways you can leverage your search.
