Video Interviewing Tips!
Dee Gilbert, Associate Director of Employer Development, recently shared some helpful information regarding virtual interviews.
In a recent YouTube Q&A, HireVue CEO & Chairman, Kevin Parker shares some top tips to help you prepare for an on-demand interview.
- Pick a quiet spot – we’ve seen some great interviews on mobile devices in the front seat of cars.
- Set aside enough time to do the interview. Most take 25-35 minutes.
- Research the job just like an in-person interview.
- Anticipate the questions – these aren’t top secret. Do your Googles.
- Use the STAR technique as a framework for answering behavioral questions. STAR stands for situation, task, action, result.
- Use notes – you don’t have to memorize everything or be sneaky with post-its.
- This isn’t a screen test or an attempt at a viral TikTok video. The content of your answers is the most important part of the process.
You can watch the recorded interview with Kevin Parker here.

Best Places to Work in Government – new rankings
The annual Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® rankings, produced by the nonprofit, nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service and Boston Consulting Group, measure employee engagement and satisfaction government-wide and at individual departments, agencies and subcomponents.
The rankings and accompanying data provide a means of holding federal leaders accountable for the health of their organizations, shining the spotlight on agencies that are successfully engaging employees as well as on those that are falling short.
The data provides leaders with a roadmap to better manage our government’s most important asset—its employees. Best-in-class private sector organizations understand that increased employee engagement and satisfaction lead to better performance and outcomes, and federal leaders need to follow suit by placing greater emphasis on improving the workforce and the workplace culture.

Federal Defenders of NY – investigative intern with an alum
The intern investigator will work as part of the legal team to represent clients accused of federal crimes. There is no requirement that the intern has prior experience with investigations; training will be provided. Interns should have an interest in and a commitment to social and criminal justice issues. We are looking for students with a passion for working with the underprivileged and the marginalized.
Apply here: https://www.federaldefendersny.org/investigatorintern.
From the alum “It could be a good fit for anyone who wants to get a front-row seat to the federal criminal legal system in New York. We have some interesting trials lined up this summer and the interns will definitely help out on those.”
