While the global recession has taken its toll on many office perks, there are still plenty of companies that believe worker happiness is non-negotiable. Here are five you might want to check out when looking for a place to intern – and eventually, launch a career.

Orbitz is one of the Web’s top travel booking sites, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that they let their employees take a little time off. How much, exactly? New employees get 12 vacation days, five floating holidays and 10 regular holidays in addition to sick hours. Telecommuting is totally acceptable, and with the company providing plenty of travel vouchers, you might conclude that your best work gets done from the beach. For the charitable among us, the company also boasts a unique volunteer program that pays for two days off, an airfare and a hotel night when an employee chooses to do volunteer work at any approved site in the world.

The investment research firm boasts one of the coolest modern offices you’ll ever see, with spectacular views of Chicago’s lakefront and transparent offices reminiscent of Bloomberg’s famous London headquarters. After four years with the company, you get six extra weeks of paid time off to go see the world. And Morningstar actively recruits new employees from a variety of different backgrounds – though some knowledge of finance is necessary, many of its new hires come from liberal arts backgrounds.

Google’s work environment is perhaps the most legendary of the Internet Age, providing a hands-off, collaborative atmosphere where employees are allowed to spend one-fifth of their time working on their own chosen projects. Working at Google means free (and great) in-house cuisine, flexible hours, a free and fully-paid Android phone and some of the best stock options and 401(k) matching in the business. Google one-ups Morningstar with its sabbatical offer, even though you have to wait a year more for it to kick in: Employees get three months of paid time off when they reach the five-year mark.
