Proposed topic: “The University of Sussex welcomes you for an exciting evening. We will be joined by Dr Rebecca Prentice, a Reader in Anthropology and International Development at Sussex’s School of Global Studies, for a lecture discussing ‘What is Poverty’. The session will give expose you to the main themes within academic learnings on poverty, how we teach at Sussex and why we have been ranked 1st in the World for Development Studies for seven consecutive years. We will also be joined by Marshall scholar alumni, and Kasia Symons (International Officer, North America) will host the session. We look forward to seeing you there!”.

In general, the sessions will be 45 minutes – 60 minutes long and will be held Mondays (or Tuesdays if Monday is a bank holiday) at 5:00pm GMT or BST. The topic and structure of the sessions will be determined by each partner university but might include a presentation, mini lecture or a student panel.

Catherine Kish ’24 Named a Truman Scholar

Congratulations to Catherine Kish ’24 who was selected as a 2023 Truman Scholar! As one of 62 new Truman scholars, Catherine joins an outstanding group of college juniors poised to become leaders in public service. Each Truman Scholar receives funding for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government. Proposed topic: Discover more about Postgraduate opportunities Cambridge. In this session, we’ll introduce the University of Cambridge and what it’s like to live and study at one of the UKs most historic universities. We’ll cover the key stages of applying and hear from a current student. There will also be opportunity for Q&As as part of the webinar.

S. Grady Welsh Selected as a Goldwater Scholar

Congratulations to S. Grady Welsh ’24 who was named a 2023 Goldwater Scholar! The Goldwater Scholarship Program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Grady plans to pursue a PhD in ecology and study interactions between climate change and wetlands. The 413 Scholars this year were selected from 1267 natural science, engineering and mathematics students nominated by 427 academic institutions. Two Middlebury Seniors Win Watson Fellowships

Congratulations to Aubrianna Wilson ’23 and Clark O’Bryan ’23 who were recently selected as Watson Fellows by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation! The fellowship provides funding for one year of purposeful exploration through a self-designed project. Clark will travel to Ireland, Rwanda, Bangladesh and Japan to explore how traditional builders and craftspeople are responding to a changing climate. Aubrianna will work with disability communities in Spain, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia, exploring how dancers, actors, healers and advocates foster disability justice, empowerment and healing.
