Apply now to attend PPIA and NASPAA’s virtual summer conference BUILDING AN EQUITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE WORLD: A VIRTUAL CONFERENCE AND POLICY HACK-A-THON FOR FUTURE PUBLIC INTEREST LEADERS.

What’s the focus?

Public Interest Technology (PIT) is a rapidly growing and essentially important field where technology and public policy overlap. Carnegie Mellon University has been a leader in this space for over 50 years, promoting the use of technology to advance the public interest.

Our 2022 Public Service Weekend virtual conference will highlight the rising prominence of PIT and bring together a diverse group of practitioners from across the field—including policymakers, technologists, designers, and leaders—to develop innovative solutions to pressing issues in public policy and equity. This interactive weekend will introduce undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds to careers and opportunities for graduate-level education in PIT.

Who should apply?

  • Rising college juniors and seniors interested in public policy, public interest technology, policy analytics, and related fields, who are strongly considering graduate education and/or careers in these fields.
  • Students can apply from ANY undergraduate major, including political science, government, the liberal arts, fine arts, and STEM fields. Successful applicants will share a passion for solving complex problems and working together with others from a diversity of fields, backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Preference will be given to students representing underserved communities from across the United States and/or working towards equity issues.

Juniors–Applications for the 2019 PPIA Junior Summer Institute Now Open!

The application for 2019 PPIA Junior Summer Institute Application is now open and due on November 1, 2018! The application can be found online at https://jsiawards.ppiaprogram.org/.

The goal of the PPIA Fellowship Program is to help prepare to pursue Masters’ or joint degree, typically in public policy, public administration, international affairs or a related field. The organization does this through the intensive study provided by participation in a Junior Summer Institute (JSI), through partnerships with universities across the country, and through an alumni network that provides opportunities to connect with nearly 4000 individuals who share the same interest in public service.

PPIA seeks out high-potential undergraduate students from universities across the country to participate in an intensive seven-week Junior Summer Institute (JSI) before their senior year. During their program, fellows are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in graduate school and ultimately, in influential roles serving the public good.

Benefits include a summer stipend, room and board, travel assistance, and financial support for graduate school if they attend one of the Graduate School Consortium programs.

New! Kanders Churchill Fellowship for Graduate Study of Science Policy

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States is pleased to announce the launch of the Kanders Churchill Scholarship for the 2017 Churchill Scholarship competition, for attendance at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, in the 2018-19 academic year.

The Churchill Scholarship dates to 1963 and was established at the request of Sir Winston Churchill to increase cooperation between the USA and United Kingdom in advancing science and technology. Today, there are 15 Scholarships awarded each year to US graduates from one of our Participating Institutions (for eligibility and criteria see www.churchillscholarship.org). The Kanders Churchill Scholarship will bring that number to 16.

The Kanders Churchill Scholar will hold a bachelor’s degree in science, mathematics, or engineering, and will attend the Cambridge Master’s in Public Policy (see http://www.polis.cam.ac.uk/study-at-polis/graduates/MPhilPP).

The selection process will be different from that for the other 15 Churchill Scholars. Applicants for the Kanders Churchill Scholarship must be US citizens who have graduated with a degree in science, mathematics, or engineering, from any US institution within the past two years. Unlike the other Churchill Scholarships, there will be no application to the Churchill Foundation. Instead, candidates will tick a box on their Cambridge application (see http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/). The deadline is October 11, 2017. As with all Churchill Scholarships, applicants must put Churchill College as their first college choice. The selection process will be completed in early February. The Selection Committee will consider candidates’ academic achievements in STEM as well as their preparation for the Master’s in Public Policy.
