Paola in her own words: “Hi! My name is Paola, and I am a senior studying neuroscience and Portuguese from Los Angeles, CA. Outside of the classroom, I serve as co-founder and president of UR-STEM and as a program leader for First@Midd.
However, most of my professional growth has taken place at the Open Door Clinic in Middlebury. Since the fall of 2015, I have been working as an administrative assistant and medical interpreter for Latinx migrant farm workers. Throughout the past three years, I have acquired clinical shadowing experience, a glimpse into health care management, and a new perspective on the disparities that shape care in underserved communities.
Increasing access to equitable health care for all people, especially marginalized people, has always been on the forefront of my career interests. To gain an understanding of care delivery in a larger context, I interned as a Posse Ubben Fellow at the Children’s Health Fund in New York City, a national organization aimed at providing America’s most disadvantaged children with high quality care. I worked on the CHF’s project to reduce health barriers to learning under the supervision of President Emeritus and co-founder Dr. Irwin Redlener and Executive Vice President Karen Redlener. My interest in health care systems brought me back to LA this past summer as a USC Gehr Fellow, where I participated in projects relating to health care systems science and issues of access that my hometown faces.”
Paola is an wonderful resource and we are thrilled to have her part of our CCI team!
