Meet Midd alum Allison Grimaldi Donahue ‘07 (Writer, Translator and Editor)
Allison’s work has appeared in Electric Literature, The Brooklyn Rail, Words Without Borders, The Fanzine, The American Reader, The Newer York (theEeel) The Diner Journal, The New Inquiry and Dead King Magazine among others. She serves as Fiction editor at Queen Mob’s Teahouse and is Associate Translation Editor at Drunken Boat. She is a regular blogger for the American Literary Translator’s Association. Allison also translates from Italian to English and edits in the world of fine art for clients such as Mousse Magazine, e-flux journal, Toilet Paper, Centro Pecci Prato, Cobra Museum Amersterdam and the Guggenheim Museum. She holds an MA from the University of Toronto Centre for Comparative Literature, an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is working towards her PhD at The European Graduate School. She teaches in the Writing Program at John Cabot Univeristy, Rome.

Workshop: Pursuing an Advanced Degree in the Humanities: Tips and Stories from an alum
Connor Williams ’09 is currently pursuing a PhD in History and African American Studies at Yale. He is happy to share advice, experiences, and answer questions for students considering pursuing an advanced degree in the humanities. He hopes to demystify both the application process and the humanities grad school experience itself. In addition to discussing a PhD in the humanities, he’s also open to discussing post-doctorate employment prospects, including work in museums, private schools, and state educational offices (such as historical societies, state libraries, and so forth). Prior to Yale, Connor also taught for several years in private schools, and also earned an M.A. at Dartmouth. Open to all majors in any humanities field, and all class years welcome as you explore options for after graduation. Lunch of assorted sandwiches will be available.

Career Talk with Wendy Whelan- Wednesday, October 3
Wendy Whelan was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. She is a guest artist with The Royal Ballet and the Kirov Ballet. She has performed all over the U.S., South America, Europe, and Asia. Whelan has also been an influential guest artist with Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. In 2012, as her career at New York City Ballet began to wind down, Wendy began to develop new collaborative projects. Her inaugural project, “Restless Creatures: premiered at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2013, and is the subject of a documentary currently on Netflix. What I Wish I’d Known about Graduate School
On Thursday, April 12, we welcome to Middlebury four graduate students and one postdoctoral fellow from the University of Chicago. They specialize in English Language and Literature, Linguistics, Microbiology, and Sociology. They will discuss things that they wish they’d known about graduate school, including time management, combating isolation, and building community—a unique challenge for graduate students of color and first-generation college students.

Carolyn Barnwell ’07
Documentary Producer
National Geographic Society
Carolyn Barnwell is a documentary producer who helps scientists and impact-oriented organizations communicate their work to general audiences. She believes that communicating science and is as important as practicing it. Carolyn spent the last six years at National Geographic on the Science and Exploration Media team producing short-form videos and television shows. Project highlights include advocacy campaign videos for Endangered Species Day, the Global Partnership for Oceans with the World Bank, and short documentaries about archaeological and cultural preservation with the TED Prize. Carolyn also wrote, produced and edited for Nat Geo’s first-ever digital series showcasing scientists and explorers’ fieldwork.
A lifelong lover of nature, travel, and service, Carolyn combined her passions for producing volunteer trips and storytelling into a career after earning a BA in Human Ecology from Middlebury. She was granted a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study climate change impacts in vulnerable coastal communities in Oceania and Africa, and went on to work for Brighter Planet, a Middlebury-based social enterprise focused on funding renewable energy projects on family farms in the U.S. She earned a graduate certificate from the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies before moving to D.C. to join National Geographic in 2011. Carolyn is currently teaching Nat Geo’s Sciencetelling™ video workshop with conservationists in Latin America and producing media for social impact organizations with Ground Media. In addition to her production work, Carolyn also earned a graduate certificate from Accomplishment Coaching and works with private life coaching clients.

Andrew Forsthoefel ’11

Andrew Forsthoefel is a writer, speaker, and peace activist. After graduating from Middlebury College in 2011, he spent nearly a year walking across the United States. He now teaches listening as a practice in peace-making and deep connection, running workshops and micro-journeys at schools, businesses, and retreat centers. He lives in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts.
