Killam Fellowship for Study Abroad in Canada

The Killam Fellowships Program provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from universities in Canada and the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country. Students may participate in the program via the Open Competition modality – applying for and registering at the host university and paying host tuition fees.

For more information, see https://www.fulbright.ca/programs/killam-fellowships/americans

Conditions

  • Students need to select courses that will receive credits at their home institution.
  • Students that take up the Killam Fellowship in the last year of their undergraduate studies must complete their last semester at their home university.
  • The Killam Fellowships Program offers a cash award of $10,000 US for a full academic year (pro-rated at $5,000 US for one semester), along with an allowance to offset the cost of health insurance in the currency of the host country.
  • The Foundation hosts all new Killam Fellows at an Orientation program in Ottawa each fall and again at a seminar in Washington D.C. each spring (should public health guidelines allow it).
  • In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant in an amount not to exceed $800. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the culture of the host country.

Application deadline: January 31st, 2022

Harris-Weidner ’22 Wins Boren Scholarship

Congratulations to Ming Harris-Weidner ’22! Ming is one of 217 undergraduates who received the David L. Boren Scholarship this year. The scholarship will support Ming’s continued study of Chinese language. The Boren scholarship supports students pursuing international and language education in areas of the world considered critical to U.S. interests. Congratulations to Middlebury’s Fulbright and CLS Finalists and Alternates!

The Fellowships Office is happy to announce that twelve Middlebury students and alumni were named Fulbright finalists and another six seniors were named alternates for the 2020-21 US Fulbright Student Program. Two students were named finalists for the 2020 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program, and another three were named alternates. Congratulations to all of you! This is, however, a very different year that we planned for due to COVID-19. The summer 2020 CLS program was suspended; Fulbright grants now will not begin until Jan 1, 2021 at the earliest. This means that many finalists will not be able to accept their grants for different reasons–a reality that is disappointing to so many. But we want to recognize this accomplishment by our students and alumni–well done! Alternates and finalists can reapply–so please talk with us about that. Fulbright and CLS application processes for this fall are proceeding as normal.

Congratulations to Middlebury’s Fulbright Finalists and Alternates for Study/Research and English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Grants!

CLS Summer Program Suspended for Summer 2020

Today we received notice that CLS is suspending all summer language institutes for 2020 in light of the U.S. Department of State Global Level 3 Health Advisory – Reconsider Travel issued on March 11. The program made this decision with the health and well-being of participants as their priority. All 2020 finalists and alternates may reapply for the 2021 CLS program.
