Mind-Blowing Summer Program in Africa with ThinkImpact

ThinkImpact launches its application for the 2013 Institute in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa. Throughout the eight-week total immersion experience you will foster social entrepreneurship and gain real-world interpersonal skills.

ThinkImpact provides you with a curriculum and guidance to think with unprecedented creativity about how to:

1.     Inspire sustainable microenterprise development

2.     Tackle social challenges in rural communities, and

3.     Build and operate a team to do it!

The 2013 ThinkImpact Institute runs from June 19th  through August 14th. This includes an in-country training called ThinkImpact University (TIU), 7 weeks in your rural community and an end-of-program debrief, called Disrupt, at the end of the program.

Winter Term Internship: Teaching English in El Triunfo, Ecuador, and Nosara, Costa Rica! Information Session

Teaching English in El Triunfo, Ecuador gives students an opportunity to help local students from ages 6-13 improve their English skills. Aside from the English teacher no one else in the town speaks English, so the ability to speak Spanish is necessary. The goal of this J-term program is to get the kids excited about English and help them improve their speaking abilities.
You should attend this information session prior to submitting an application on MOJO. We will go over the differences between the Nosara and El Triunfo programs. Alumni from these programs will discuss the details of the internships. Selected students will need to complete the Winter Term proposals forms and submit them by the deadline on MOJO.

The World Camp Service Internship is a total immersion program that offers the opportunity to be challenged by work in rural Malawian communities. Interns work directly in schools teaching a HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness curriculum, and leading environmental awareness and gender empowerment workshops. While there is downtime and some free days, most of your time is spent teaching, or interacting with community members and students.

As assistant to the Program Director, you will work as a representative of Reclaim Childhood (RC) in Jordan, helping to organize and run open houses for beneficiary outreach, oversee logistics for other RC summer volunteers, and work on program design and implementation of the summer program. During our summer program, which aims to provide a safe space for young girls to be kids while building confidence and leadership skills, you will work closely with and supervise young women who are either local University Students or recent graduates. *Although this internship is unpaid, you can apply for funding from Middlebury at go/summerfunding.
2.       Educational Service Internship Programs at World Camp, Inc. in Malawi

This international internship experience allows interns from around the world to gain work experience in the fields of education, health, international development and social services while providing outreach in target schools and communities in Malawi. Interns complete an intensive orientation on Malawian culture, the education system and World Camp’s focus issues and curriculum. The next four weeks are spent working at WC partner schools in rural communities around Lilongwe, teaching curriculum to Standards 6-8, initiating school action plans in Teacher Workshops and conducting community Outreach Projects. Volunteer in June 2012 in Ghana for Community Water Solutions

Interested in volunteering in Africa?  Want to learn more about the global water crisis?   Looking for experience working in the field?

The CWS Fellowship Program is a three-week water education and leadership training experience in Northern Region Ghana. The purpose of the program is to teach individuals about the global water crisis, and inspire them to become leaders in the field of international development.

Fellows are grouped in teams of four and paired with a rural community in Northern Region Ghana. On the ground, teams are first trained in water quality testing, and the CWS water treatment methods.  They then spend two and a half weeks in the field implementing and monitoring a CWS water business in their village. By the end of the 3 week program, each team will have provided a permanent source of safe drinking water for an entire community (approximately 500~1,000 people)!

Global Health Corps Fellowship

The Global Health Corps is working to build the movement for global health equity by supporting emerging leaders in year-long fellowships with global health organizations in Burundi, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, and the US. This year, they are hoping to place over 90 fellows in organizations like Partners In Health, the Millennium Villages Project, Clinton Health Access Initiative, and the State Department, working on everything from architecture to communications and fundraising, to training and direct service. GHC has a unique model for service learning, helping fellows to learn the leadership and technical skills they need in this field while pairing fellows with a local fellow to better understand culture and context, and emphasizing the importance of reflection and discernment while doing this work.

Global Health Corps Fellows must:

  • Be under age 30 at the time of application
  • Have an undergraduate university degree by July 2012

Amanda W. Maxwell joined the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in July 2009, in the Washington, D.C. office. As the Director of Latin America Projects, Ms. Maxwell manages all of NRDC’s campaigns in Mexico, Central America and South America, where the organization works on environmental conservation, energy development, sustainable tourism, fresh water supply, deforestation and other issues.  Ms. Maxwell also leads projects promoting the development of sustainable energy and energy efficiency in the region as a whole.
