Waste-to-Energy, an expanding industry

Have you heard of the Waste-to-Energy industry? Instead of filling up our precious land with garbage, Companies in the industry burn waste to produce energy. According to Green Career Central, “for each ton of municipal solid waste combusted, 500-600 kWh of electricity are produced.” The industry is very careful to burn the waste in such a way that the emissions are controlled and scrubbed. Staying up-to-date

It is essential in a job search to stay up-to-date with your industry of choice. However, an ‘industry’ is a broad beast, so what should you really know?

  • Follow new and upcoming technology
  • Know which companies are competitors
  • Understand where the industry is headed
  • Investigate how your industry is affected by external factors

Before an interview, make sure you know what the company does; an energy consulting firm can be a myriad of things, so it is crucial to know what niche they have carved out for themselves.

If you are interested in green opportunities, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an amazing source for information on things such as water, transportation, fishing subsidies, biofuels, and the health effects of consumer products. Even if it isn’t your industry of choice, take some time to peruse their Cosmetic Safety Database, which contains invaluable information on the health effects of specific products (from toothpaste, to deodorant, to shampoo).

Furthermore, check out the new tag “data point,” where we will keep you up-to-date on what is going on.

Environmental Studies Fellowships

logo_epasealDo you have an interest in Environmental Studies? Under the National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) program, a range of fellowship activities are offered to help students increase their knowledge of environmental issues while refining their professional skills. Each year, the NNEMS program offers approximately 30-40 fellowships, developed and sponsored by EPA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and in EPA’s 10 regional offices and laboratories throughout the United States. The projects are specifically narrow in scope, allowing students to complete the fellowship while working full-time at EPA during the summer or part-time during the school year. Typically, the research is conducted at an EPA office or laboratory, although other arrangements can be made in certain circumstances.
Detailed descriptions of the fellowships are provided in the annual NNEMS Catalog. The catalog is available online at www.epa.gov/education/students.html.
The research projects are organized among four key areas:

Data Point – Water Use in the USA

One thing that I think we can all agree on is that water is pretty important. So whether you are looking into graduate school or a job in the environmental sector, it is important to understand the current consumption trends with regards to water.

The U.S. Geological Survey from 2000 to 2005 has recently come out, revealing trends and problems regarding water use in the United States. Check out the Circle of Blue article on the most recent USGS report.

The article highlights that 2005 total water use is lower than in 1975 and that per-capital water use is lower than in the mid 1950s.
