Come meet with Ariana Mills ’17 to hear about her job as a research assistant (RA) in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Columbia University Medical Center and available positions in her department.

This is a highly unique position, ideal for candidates who are taking time off between college and medical school. RAs have four major responsibilities which include:

  • transplant call
  • tissue call
  • consent call
  • databasing

RAs participate in heart and lung organ procurements for transplant surgeries at Columbia. RAs pack the relevant supplies for the procuring surgeons, fly or drive with the surgeons to the donor hospital, perfuse the organ with preservation solution, and deliver the organ back to the recipient OR at Columbia. On tissue and consent calls, RAs collect tissue from cardiac surgery cases for research, as well as obtain consent from these patients to use their tissue for research. RAs regularly collect data from patient files for retrospective studies, and there are many opportunities for RAs to come up with their own research project. The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department is hiring for multiple new RA positions and we invite you come learn about these exceptional opportunities.
