The Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Columbia University Medical Center is still hiring! This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for students whose families already live in NYC or within an hour of CUMC. They encourage you to apply soon since they accept on a rolling basis. Ariana Mills ’17 currently works as an RA and is happy to be a resource. Feel free to email her with your questions.

What We Do

Research Assistant (RAs) have four major responsibilities:

  • Transplant call
  • Tissue call
  • Consent call
  • Databasing/Clinical research

RAs have the unique opportunity to participate in heart and lung procurements for transplant surgeries at CUMC. RAs travel with the procuring surgeons to the donor hospital where they serve as organ preservationists.

On tissue and consent calls, RAs collect tissue from cardiac surgery cases for research.

RAs regularly collect data from patient files for retrospective studies, and there are many opportunities for RAs to come up with their own research projects.

Application Process

The RA position is a minimum one-year commitment in addition to an onboarding period. Applicants must be graduating seniors or post-baccalaureate students. Candidates who can start will receive a $1,000/month stipend.

To apply, please email the following items to the Program Director, Dr. Catherine Wang.

  • Cover letter
  • Resume/CV
  • Contact information of two references.

Applications that do not include all of the above items will not be considered.
