Projects for Peace is an initiative for all students at the Davis United World College Scholars Program partner schools to design grassroots projects for the summer of 2015 – anywhere in the world – which promote peace and address the root causes of conflict among parties.  We encourage applicants to use their creativity to design projects and employ innovative techniques for engaging project participants in ways that focus on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding and breaking down barriers which cause conflict, and finding solutions for resolving conflict and maintaining peace.  Through a competition on over 90 campuses, projects will be selected for funding at $10,000 each.

HAPPENING TODAY: Information Session on 2015 Davis Projects for Peace!!

The Davis Projects for Peace program is an invitation to undergraduates at the American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2015.

Undergraduate students at more than 90 college campuses across the United States, including those of you who will graduate this academic year, are eligible to design and submit proposals that address the goal of improving the prospects for peace in the 21st century.  The top submissions from the participating campuses, including at least one from Middlebury, will receive funding of $10,000 with which to initiate projects anywhere in the world during the summer of 2015.

Policy Manager – J-PAL Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)
J-PAL LAC is currently recruiting for a Policy Manager to lead a number of policy activities in Mexico and Central America. These activities include building relationships with key stakeholders, disseminating research findings to policymakers, leading networking follow-up and provision of technical assistance to government and civil society, and catalyzing new randomized evaluations, among others. The Policy Manager will also attend and organize conferences and training courses in the region. This position will be based in Mexico City.

Research Manager – J-PAL North America
J-PAL North America seeks a Research Manager to manage and support a number of randomized evaluations testing innovations across a broad range of sectors, with an initial emphasis on health care delivery. Policy and Training Manager – J-PAL South Asia

Achvat Amim – Solidarity of Nations is a framework for meaningful engagement with leading Israeli social justice organizations in and around Jerusalem. Achvat Amim focuses on developing practical skills in community development and education through intensive volunteer projects and engaging with social change and human rights movements. By renewing the conversation on Jewish Peoplehood and Zionism for the 21st century, participants can explore and help shape Jewish culture and identity for themselves and the Jewish people. The Intensive Arabic Semester Program offers a holistic approach to language learning, coexistence work, and inter-community volunteering between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs. During the course of the five-month program, our students learn Hebrew, standard and spoken Arabic, and Israeli and Middle Eastern History. Students experience Israeli Kibbutz life while simultaneously being immersed in the local Arab culture through volunteering, field trips, and home stay families. The program is administered by Givat Haviva and now is accredited by the Al Qasemi Academic College of Education. The Lotan Center for Creative Ecology offers short and long-term hands-on opportunity at Kibbutz Lotan to allow anyone to discover the challenges involved with the design, building and running of sustainable communities, linking together ecological, social, economical and spiritual aspects into a unified whole. Practical skills are developed through hands-on work in our environmental education center, organic gardens, alternative/natural building projects and the Lotan Nature and Migratory Bird Reserve, complemented by theoretical sessions in topics such as ecological design, permaculture and sustainability. Practical work includes: Organic gardening, natural & alternative building with mud, straw and straw bales, tires and recycled waste, creative recycling – creating art and usable objects with discarded materials, expansion, maintenance and running of the Center for Creative Ecology, development and upkeep of the nature reserve and nature trails, setting up workshops for educational tour groups, and more. Our knowledgeable KPC staff works one-on-one to help each applicant create a personalized 4-10 month Israel experience. Population Media Center (PMC) strives to improve the health and well-being of people around the world through the use of entertainment-education strategies, like serialized dramas (soap operas) on radio and television, in which characters evolve into role models for the audience for positive behavior change.

The Yiddish Book Center is looking for fellows!

YBCThe Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program is looking for recent college graduates with a background in Jewish studies (or related disciplines) and a working knowledge of Yiddish. The Yiddish Book Center aims to preserve Jewish culture and heritage through literature. The founder of the Center, Aaron Lansky, realized that untold numbers of irreplaceable Yiddish books, which were the primary legacy of 1,000 years of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, were being discarded by American-born Jews that could not read Yiddish. The Yiddish Book Center has more than a million volumes in its libraries and their goal is to place these books in the hands of new readers. Their initiatives include education, translation, publications, oral history, exhibits, and public programs.

The Global Diversity Foundation is hosting the 4th annual Global Environments Summer Academy (GESA) in Burn, Switzerland! The first application deadline of the two-stage application process is January 15th. 

GESA works to broaden and deepen the knowledge, networking, and communication skills of postgraduate students and professionals who are concerned about the human dimensions of climate change and environmental challenges. GESA addresses the scale and scope of these challenges and puts them in context of contemporary environmental issues, history, and political ecology.

Yahel Social Change Program is a unique 9-month service learning experience for young adults between the ages of 21 and 27. The program, located inn Gedera, Israel, combines hands-on volunteer work with in-depth learning and immersion. Yahel participants explore Israel by living, learning and volunteering alongside their peers from the local Ethiopian Israeli community. Yahel and its participants make meaningful contributions to Israeli society by working in collaboration with Friends by Nature – an Israeli grassroots organization working in the Ethiopian community in the fields of community empowerment and education.

We are an independent 501(c)3 which is not funded by Princeton University. PiLA placements offer important field experience to recent college alumni who cannot otherwise find NGO work in Latin America and who are eager to pursue careers in development work; no other program like this exists. Therefore, PiLA provides crucial work experience to aspiring public sector professionals.
