Incredible history unfolding on my laptop and Middlebury is THERE!

While many of you are on break from Middelbury, I am sitting in my office on campus in Vermont watching the UN Climate Conference LIVE in Copenhagen.  Right now, Jamie Henn ’07, 350.org coordinator, is answering questions from the audience and press about what’s next after COP15.  I also got to watch current Midd student, Ben Wessel ’10, earlier at a different panel discussion talking about synergies with youth from China.  Another Midd siting – here, Kelly Blynn ’07, 350.org coordinator, dressed up in a penguin outfit (I think that might also be Emily Adler ’07 disguised as one of the flock as well) singing “It’s Getting Hot in Here!” on the BBC Report.

Amazing stuff.  Too bad the popular press keeps chasing the negative (i.e. the protest arrests) versus what’s going on inside the halls!

Follow history unfolding all this week at: http://theuptake.org/en/.

So incredible…our little corner of Vermont is making lots of heat inside (and outside)!

UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen

You may have heard whispers of it from around the water cooler, or perhaps they were persuasive yells from people outside Proctor Dining Hall. Well, what you heard is true. The United Nations Climate Change Conference is happening from December 7th to December 18th in Copenhagen.

What does Green Career Central say you should do to prepare?

“The best thing you can do at this juncture is to be aware of the issues. Pay attention to the news. Listen for indications of how various decisions are likely to impact your target industry. Invest some time in understanding the issues at hand.”

Why is it important to come together and make a deal for the future? Check out this fact sheet for a Copenhagen deal as published by the United Nations Climate Change Conference. It is a great way to clue into the issues at hand.

For an overview of what to expect, key things to look for in the news, and an overview of the important issues, the Green Career Central’s newsletter.

Networking: Why, How and When

Thanksgiving is coming and it is a perfect time to start networking. So, if you can’t wait for the the annual Turkey Talk Networking Workshop on November 19th at 4:30 PM in MBH 104 and on November 30 at 12:15 PM in Hillcrest 103, read on.

Networking has many benefits. One such benefit is access to job and internship opportunities that are only available through friends, family and colleagues. Also, with a solid network, you have access to advice from people who actually know you.

When networking, it is important to organize yourself. Whether with a notebook, or a computer database, it is important to keep track of your contacts’ names, what they have been up to, how you met them etc. Furthermore it is important to keep in touch. But, don’t only keep in touch when you need something from your contact. Try to call/e-mail/grab lunch during the good times so that when you do need their help, they don’t remember you simply as a drag.

All holidays, parties and events are networking opportunities. So, an article at CNNMoney.com recommends that to these events you arrive unfashionably early because Read more

Interview Tip: The 10 Questions You Need to Know the Answers to

Do you know how to answer “What is your greatest weakness?” Now, jokingly you might want to respond, I work too hard, and I care to much, but what is the interviewer actually looking for?

Do you know how to answer the ubiquitous, “Tell me about yourself?” What about “Why are you interested?

Nailing an Interview

Everyone should check out “How to Make Yourself Standout in an Interview.” It is a great article with sections on what you should know about the job, the industry and the company.

It recommends that before the interview, you research industry trends as well as have a list of your five most compelling qualities, which you then reference during the interview.

Also, if you have a phone interview check out our earlier post, “Phone Interviews” and, if you have time, remember to call the CSO to arrange a practice interview.
