Lab reports are most often written to convey work to laboratory management—in academia, this is your professor. In the world of professional scientists, lab reports are rarely published. Thus, this site will not address how to write a good lab report. Each professor at Middlebury (as at most colleges) has very different expectations for writing lab reports for their classes and should be consulted individually for appropriate rules and guidelines.
However, note that most of the writing guidelines throughout this site apply to all types of writing, including lab reports! It is still valuable for you to be familiar with qualities such as conciseness, clarity, and quantitativeness. Thus, we recommend that you still explore everything under the “Essentials” tab on this site to improve your overall writing skills.
