Gretchen Wallace and her work in Africa

Gretchen Wallace will be on campus

this week only.

Her work in development in Africa, women and development, and her NGO Global Grassroots will be the topic of her talks on campus. Gretchen is the sister of Brian Steidle, the American marine who was the first to bring evidence of the genocide in Darfur out of Sudan. He broke the story with Nicholas Kristoff, and later collaborated with Gretchen to produce the documentary film. This week she will host a workshop, a lecture and more.

Davis Projects for Peace

Have you heard about the Davis Projects for Peace, a program which honors Kathryn Wasserman Davis, a 102 year old philanthropist who is interested in finding new ways to advance world peace.

Undergraduate students at more than 90 college campuses across the United States, including those who will graduate this academic year, are eligible to design and submit proposals that address the goal of improving the prospects for peace in the 21st century.  The top submissions from the participating campuses, including at least one from Middlebury, will receive funding of $10,000 from Mrs. Davis with which to initiate projects anywhere in the world during the summer of 2010.

If you are interested, make sure to attend the Q and A session at Old Stone Mill on Monday November 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Students who have been recipients of past Davis Project for Peace funding, as well as students whose projects were supported by the College, will be available to answer questions and speak about their individual experiences. It will be an excellent opportunity to see firsthand what Middlebury students have accomplished with the support of this Initiative.

This is an initiative for all undergraduates, and not those solely interested in politics, the social sciences, or international studies.  Read more

2010-2011 Acumen Fund Fellows Program – Acumen Fund is a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. Imagine H2O Prize– The Imagine H2O Prize is a new business plan competition that focuses on solutions to water issues. The 2009 – 2010 competition will focus on water efficiency in agriculture, commercial, industrial or residential applications, such as water demand reduction, improved water use, water recycling and/or reuse.

The total prizes that will be awarded in this year’s competition will be $70,000, including cash awards and in-kind services including legal, tax, and accounting services. In addition, winners will receive in-depth business incubation including mentorship, introductions to financiers, potential beta customers, and go-to-market partners.

2010 Echoing Green Fellowship– Echoing Green provides seed funding for social entreprenuers to launch new organizations. Thusfar, Echoing Green has invested more than $28 million in seed funding to more than 471 social entrepreneurs and their organizations. Come to the Career Conversation with David Torres ’88 entitled, “From Investment Banking to NGO Work in Africa: An Awakening,” next Friday, October 23 in the RAJ conference room.

While traveling around the world with his family on a sabbatical from his role as a Managing Director at JPMorgan in London in 2005, David was introduced to mothers2mothers, and worked as a volunteer in Cape Town for two months. After returning to London in early 2006, David decided to end his 22-year career in banking and join mothers2mothers as a permanent staff member, working first in London from August 2006, and moving with his wife and two children to South Africa in January 2007.

David’s roles include both local and international fundraising and development, and involvement with the business side of mothers2mothers’ international expansion. Read more

The Environmental Council manages an innovative grant program designed to inspire environmental leadership across the campus through sustainability initiatives. Thanks to President Ron Liebowitz the Environmental Council continues to be able to provide grants to Middlebury College students, staff and faculty. Nearly 40 grants have been awarded utilizing more than $65,000 of funding.

If you have an interest in corporate social responsibility and the development of sustainable strategies for addressing social and environmental issues, you may be interested in the StartingBloc Fellowships next spring.

“StartingBloc is a global community of social innovators creating new solutions to timeworn problems.” Each year the fellowship begins with a five-day long Institute for Social Innovation (in either New York or Boston).  The institute exposes the Fellows to both industry practitioners and professors who both lecture and teach workshops on Enterprise Planning, Finance Basics, Corporate Responsibility and more. It focuses on networking and building life-long skills.

Global Health and Social Entrepreneurship Idea Incubator Workshop – November 6, 2009
 
Unite For Sight’s Founder and CEO will hold a ½-day idea incubator workshop in New Haven, Connecticut.  The workshop focuses on effective healthcare delivery and the importance of best practices in global health, successful strategies of social innovation and social entrepreneurship, metrics and measuring outcomes, and mentoring and guidance on how to establish new initiatives and organizations.  The workshop will be a small, intimate forum with a limited capacity of no more than 9 participants.  Application instructions and complete details can be seen here.

Increasingly, youth around the world are taking it upon themselves to engage social challenges and effect positive community change. A new generation of socially responsible ventures has emerged that addresses urgent global and local issues such as health, poverty, violence, racism, environmental destruction and civic apathy. This wave of youth social entrepreneurship offers new set of solutions and energy, but also brings with it its own set of professional, financial and personal challenges.

This teleconference will discuss the challenges, strategies and rewards of youth social entrepreneurship. Specific topics will include:
