Bioinformatician at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

The Bunyavanich Lab welcomes talented, self-motivated individuals who can fulfill the responsibilities and requirements below to apply for a bioinformatician position in our lab at the Institute for Data Science and Genomic Technology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. The successful applicant will be part of an interdisciplinary team led by Dr. Supinda Bunyavanich that applies computational analysis and bioinformatics to interpret multi-scale data generated from subjects with asthma and allergic diseases.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze high-throughput sequence data.
  • Develop and implement methods to analyze these data.
  • Maintain large datasets linked to clinical data.
  • Communicate progress with PI regularly and contribute to the success of the research team.
  • Develop and maintain productive collaborations within Mount Sinai and with outside researchers in academia and industry.
  • Publish and present novel research findings in academic journals and conferences
  • Some supervision of trainees and technical staff may also be required.

Requirements:

  • Degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, genomics, or a related field.
  • Outstanding programming skills in R, Python, and Unix shell scripting.
  • Excellent track record of analyzing sequence data. Experience with clinical cohorts and microbiome analysis a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of statistics and statistical genetics. Familiarity with genomic data tools, repositories, and databases.
  • Strong attention to detail and solid analytical skills.
  • Ability to work hard and independently while contributing to the team effort and adhering to deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with track record of productive collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work concurrently on several projects, and good understanding of analytic complexities to do independent research as well as assist other researchers.

The Gujral lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has an opening for an unpaid internship that would be perfect for a senior student in biological sciences. This position will work with members of the laboratory of Dr. Taran Gujral in the Division of Human Biology to embark on an exciting journey to tackle two of the most burning issues in cancer treatment, metastasis and drug resistance, through an approach which combines cutting edge high-throughput methods and focused biology studies in cell lines and various mouse models. Students will gain hands-on experience in using state-of-the art technologies in proteomics and genomics. 

Responsibilities: The position will begin with the student completing general lab tasks to ensure an adequate time commitment is feasible and a copacetic atmosphere is maintained. If everything works out, there will be a training period (varies dependent on individual) before moving on to your own project. Projects could vary from tumor micro-environment to immuno-oncology to tumor metabolism and drug resistance. A student could participate in many of the aspects of the work in the lab and would be expected to learn how to develop a research question, design experiments to answer the question, perform experiments, interpret the results and design additional experiments based on the results. Depending on their specific interests, the student could learn about different cancer models including PDX, orthotopic, chemical-induced and xenograft, and many other current methodologies such as reverse phase lysate microarrays, high throughput live cell microscopy-based assays, immunofluorescence microscopy, western blot analysis, RNAseq, quantitative PCR and use of various data analysis software. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to present their research during lab meetings and scientific conferences and to write, submit, and publish scientific papers. The intern will report directly to Dr. Gujral but is expected to integrate and function as team member at Gujral lab and Human Biology.

Qualifications:

  • Prior lab experience in biological sciences is preferred.
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (Undergrad credit for research is a possibility).
  • Completed 1 year of undergraduate level science courses.
  • Good communication skills and an interest in learning
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Good numeracy, literacy and organizational skills.

Research Data Associate – Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Health

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Data Associate within the NYU Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine’s Research Division. In this role, the successful candidate will enroll emergency department patients across participating sites in English and Spanish to support a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded research project that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Relay program for opioid overdose prevention.   

Research Data Associates will be responsible for patient recruitment, consent, enrollment, and accurate data collection. Research Data Associates will additionally contact and track study participants for follow-up assessments, perform data entry, and assist with data management. Research Data Associates will work directly with patients in the emergency departments across participating sites in New York City and also with a team of other research staff, and will report to the study’s Project Manager and Principal Investigator (Kelly Doran, MD, MHS). Research Data Associates will participate in weekly research team meetings.    

 Specific Responsibilities

  • Clinical Research Duties:
    • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of research study, study rationale, study subject, and clinical procedures associated with the study.
    • Screens potential patients/participants for eligibility to the study.
    • Conducts the informed consent process with patients.
    • Collaborates with various personnel that may be involved in assisting with specific aspects in the study.
    • Interacts with patients/participants and families in a courteous and professional manner.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of policies and procedures of the host institution where the study is being conducted and the regulatory requirements such as IRB and other approvals if necessary.
    • Uses available resources and established procedures to identify problems for quick resolution.
    • Conducts study survey, obtain and document information within the time frame specified.
    • Monitors any outward effects or issues regarding patient/participant safety and report this to the Principal Investigator.
    • Travels using public transportation and/or car service to study emergency department sites located in multiple boroughs in New York City.
    • Works with the Principal Investigators, Project Manager, and other team members on monitoring the overall conduct of the study.
  • Data Collection and Management:
    • Utilizes the necessary tools to ensure protocol compliance to conduct data research.
    • Utilizes established methodologies to collect patient information for the research project.
    • Ensures protocol compliance, that is, that standard steps regarding eligibility criteria, data collection, and required documentation are consistently followed.
    • Reviews any issues that deviate from standard policy and procedure with supervisor.
    • Completes paperwork and forms in a neat, accurate, timely manner.
    • Stores files in the instructed manner, with strict attention to participant confidentiality.
    • Ensures that information in computer database is accurate, entered and maintained on a timely basis.
    • May help prepare presentations for lectures and symposium, utilizing PowerPoint for slides.
  • Interacts with Medical Staff, Patients and Site Monitors:
    • Interfaces with varied persons, such as, School of Medicine and or Medical Center staff (e.g. physicians, nurses).
    • Initiates contact with patients; ensures contact with patients is courteous, effective, professional, and cooperative.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and follows proper clinical study processes within current policies and procedures.
    • Recognizes and identifies problems, appropriately escalates issues to supervisor as needed.
  • Administration, analysis, reporting, and filing:
    • Records IRB approved subject study reimbursements according to standard operating procedures.
    • Records, updates, edits, and maintains confidential information on paper or web-based forms in a neat, accurate, and timely manner.
    • Responds to requests in a timely manner, gives/receives correct information, encourages required dialogue/follow-through.
    • Secures accurate signatures and stores documents and/or forms in appropriate destination.
    • Completes filing in accordance with department procedures.
    • Duplicates and collates materials upon request.
    • Assists with other administrative tasks upon request.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Must speak Spanish and English fluently.
    • Bachelor’s degree plus one year related experience (including experience while in school) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Computer literate and able to use iPad tablets.
    • Attention to detail and punctuality are musts. Unfailing reliability and highly ethical.
    • Ability to make potential study participants feel at ease.
    • Interest in working on a study involving people who use drugs and ability to conduct work in a manner that demonstrates sensitivity and is free from stigma.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with data collection, conducting surveys, and REDCap.
    • Experience with or interest in vulnerable populations, substance use, and/or social determinants of health.
    • Availability to work weeknight, weekend, or overnight shifts preferred.
  • Working Conditions/Physical Demands: Office setting and busy emergency department setting.

American Heart Association Summer Internship in Biomedical Engineering with Oregon Health & Science University

Join the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Biomedical Engineering(BME) Department for a summer training opportunity focused on the mission of the American Heart Association (AHA) to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Located in Portland, OR, this program will provide training in experimental design, data science and analysis, and scientific writing. The internship includes participation in grand rounds in the medical school, experience in clinical shadowing as well as training in ethics, protection of human subjects, scientific writing, and experimental design. Positions are available in the cardiovascular research laboratories led by Drs. Monica Hinds, Owen McCarty, Sandra Rugonyi, Joe Aslan, and Karina Nakayama.

Program dates: The 2020 BME Summer Internship will begin in May/June and continue for 10 weeks. Start and end dates are flexible.

Eligibility: This internship is ideal for undergraduates with backgrounds in health sciences, math, physics, or engineering. Students must have completed their Sophomore year or are in their Junior and Senior years. Program will also accept recent graduates.

Program Features: Internships are open in 4 areas of research: Blood cell biology and drug development, Biomaterials and medical devices, Computational fluid dynamics and imaging, and Regenerative medicine

Grant Coordinator at Mass General

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Massachusetts General Hospital’s Medical Practice Evaluation Center (MPEC) is seeking a full-time Grant Coordinator to facilitate the management of the Center’s sponsored research portfolio throughout the award life-cycle. The incumbent will ensure the successful execution of sponsored awards in compliance with institutional and NIH/foundation policies and procedures and will provide oversight of existing MPEC assets. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation. 

  • Pre-Award: Assist in the sponsored research grant application process, including:
    • Drafting and proofreading administrative components of grant applications
    • Reviewing documents for compliance with institutional and sponsor requirements
    • Completing sponsor and institutional application forms
    • Developing study budgets
    • Search for funding opportunities and investigate those of interest to MPEC researchers 
  • Post-award:Monitor and execute fiscal functions of the Center:
    • Assemble and submit orderly and comprehensive expense reports for reimbursement
    • Facilitate routine procurement transactions such as check requests and purchase orders, following institutional policies and procedures
    • Work with Supply Chain personnel to establish new vendors for purchasing and contracting
    • Monitor project expenditures, including monthly assessments of fund activity
    • Prepare and maintain financial reports on an ongoing basis
    • Work with Grant Administrator and Research Finance to resolve accounting issues
    • Collaborate with Principal Investigators and Grant Administrator on annual grant progress reports
    • Provide timely closeout of all expired projects through the coordination of fiscal and administrative resources throughout the system
    • Collaborate with the Compliance Specialist to ensure appropriate approvals and agreements are in place for human subjects work and data transfers; monitor as appropriate through award life cycle
    • Assist with maintenance of study records, including electronic regulatory study binders, electronic lab notebooks, data management plans, and publication records 
  • MPEC responsibilities:
    • Develop systems for tracking existing Center assets, including computer hardware and software
    • Provide ongoing asset management, including serving as the liaison between Center personnel and the Partners Research Computing offices
    • Collaborate with Grant Administrator and Administrative Manager to guide and educate fellows and younger investigators in the MPEC through pre- and post-award grant processes
    • Other duties as assigned when research policies change or workloads increase

QUALIFICATIONS: Job qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-3 years of related experience in fiscal or project coordination
  • Intermediate Excel skills required; advanced skills preferred
