Timothy P. Lahey, Director of
Clinical Ethics, Infectious Disease Physician, and Professor at the University
of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine, will deliver a lecture titled “HIV Is
a Mirror: How a Virus Helps Us See Ourselves More Clearly” at 4:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, April 9 at the Robert A. Jones ’59 House Conference Room. As a
part of the ongoing Future of the Past lecture series at the Rohatyn
Center for Global Affairs, this talk seeks to bridge the gap between the
contemporary and historical in order to provoke meaningful discussion about the
future of infectious disease prevention.
Dr. Lahey will also address the striking
parallels that arise between human biology and culture as they relate to the
HIV epidemic, from the ways the immune system and our culture distinguish self
from non-self to the ways social exploitation and viral mutability complicate
our epidemic response, in hopes that they allow us to see ourselves better and
be prepared for the next modern epidemic
