The Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) in Jamkhed, Maharashtra, India, has been working among the rural poor and marginalized for over 40 years. By partnering with village communities and expanding upon local knowledge and resources, CRHP aims to effectively meet the immediate and long-term needs of these groups, especially women. With values of compassion, justice, respect, and trust, CRHP works to empower people, families, and communities regardless of caste, race, or religion through integrated efforts in health and development. CRHP was one of the first programs to utilize Village Health Workers (VHWs), local women trained in basic healthcare and community development, a highly successful public health approach that has been emulated worldwide. The work of CRHP has been recognized by the WHO and UNICEF, and has been introduced to countries across the world.
CRHP provides a field experience designed to orient students to various areas of global public health work (community-based participatory practice, maternal and child health, sanitation, environmental health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, rural development, etc.) through observation and practice. Student learning will be further guided and enhanced through field experiences, readings, as well as discussions/seminars. The goal of this practicum is to provide the student with an overview of public health work in a cross cultural, global setting and an exposure to a wide range of experiences in the field. The practicum serves to integrate course work from the students’ home institution with active learning experiences at CRHP. The fee of $1700 covers all living expenses, transportation, and excursions in India and is due by May 1, 2018.
To apply, please email your resume and contact information for two academic referecnes to info@jamkhed.org, indicating why the practicum at CRHP is of interest to you. Students will be accepted until the course is full.
