MiddLab is a new section of Middlebury’s website with no precedent: an academic network, uniting all of the… blah, blah blah.

Truth is, MiddLab has been hard for us to explain ever since we heard the idea. A research network featuring discussions and blogs, and linking together disciplinary themes? How does that work? Rather than write a manifesto, here is what we’re trying to accomplish with MiddLab.

Our Goals

  • Make research easy to discover. If you want to know what student and faculty research is going on in a department, you shouldn’t have to know where their papers are published or the address of the project’s web site. Instead, these should be one or two clicks from our home page.
  • Show connections between research. Whether researching the population growth of trees in Biology or the population density of people in Geography, projects share themes and people interested in the topic can easily explore both.
  • Start a discussion. We encourage and recommend that you add comments to the projects on this site. Ask questions, suggest new research, or explain why you disagree with the conclusions. You can add your thoughts to any project page on MiddLab, explore the individual blogs for some projects, or contact the researchers directly.
  • Provide space for research and the sciences on our site. We’ll be expanding this site to feature more presentations from the Spring Research Symposium and research projects in our science departments. Though MiddLab is open to any student, faculty or staff projects, these are areas where we know we’re not offering enough information on our site and would like to use MiddLab to expand.

Blog categories and tags: what they mean and when to use them

LIS Website Team confession: As a team we’ve struggled with a way to articulate to everyone how and why we structured the categories on this blog in the way that we did, and how we intend categories and tags to be used. Hopefully this explanation will provide a useful distinction between the two, and give both post authors and blog readers guidance for how to use them.

The One and Only – All Things LIS Blog

Voted yes on the one-blog readiness; will discuss how to launch at our next meeting.
Current categories listed below. Any change before we move ahead?

External Audience – term used TBD by vote by Fri 9/18 at 5 pm

Areas and Workgroups – use name of area as the category and use functions of the work area as tags (audience is mostly internal)

LIS landing page and the blog

How will the LIS landing page point to the Blog? I don’t think we’ve discussed whether or not our landing pages will contain a link to the blog, a feed to the blog, or both.

If we had both, would it make sense to have a link going to the whole blog, and a feed listing only our outward-facing category posts (and only displaying 2 or 3 posts so as not to clutter the page)?

e.g.

LIS landing page:

  • Link to all blog
  • Feed with Good to know(/TBD)

The LIS landing page is the only place where we have to make this determination, correct? (Since primary contacts are deciding what goes on their pages.)

Default All things LIS category

Following a long and lively discussion at our meeting today, we agreed that our team members would vote on the following terms to set as the default category name for our one blog. (This default term is intended to fill the “external” category role. We decided making this the default would encourage posters to be proactive in selecting categories.)

  • Good to know
  • Need to know
  • The essentials
  • Tuned in

Voting will end at close of business Friday, 9/18. (Please, no additional suggestions…)

Alex Chapin wrote a neat tool to analyze stats in our wordpress database and came up with this information. This information will help show us which are the most active blogs and which themes people prefer to use. These are the most popular themes on the blogging server:
