Most hope that these 8-12 week stints will give them an advantage in the post graduation job market, and many will spend the summer stapling stacks of papers and fetching coffee for little or no pay. 1. Food Activism Internship at Community Servings in Boston, MA

Deadline to Apply: April 13

Reporting directly to the CEO (Midd ’81, ’88), the intern will participate in a variety of activities within the agency–from working in the kitchen and delivering meals to sick clients, to shadowing the CEO in order to gain an understanding of the management of a complex nonprofit food program. 2. Paid Sustainability Internship at Li & Fung USA in NYC

Based in New York City, LF USA is North America’s fastest growing provider of consumer apparel, accessories, footwear, and home fashions, and their internship program is an immersive 10-week paid program that provides rising junior and senior college students with hands-on experience in design, sales, marketing, production and various corporate functions. Responsibilities of the sustainability intern include implementing various green projects, managing and contributing to LF’s green site, organizing high profile green events, and more!

3. Paid Food and Farm Intern at Vermont Youth Conservation Corps in Richmond, VT

Deadline to Apply: April 15

This hands-on experience allows interns to take part in all aspects of food production, from ecological soil management, plant propagation, to disease and pest control and raising pasture poultry. Interns will be responsible for daily chores and upkeep of the farm, and be active participants in CSA pick-ups and farmers market sales. Interns will be encouraged to work on individual projects focused on improving the farm, sustainable agriculture, education, or food justice, and be supported by the Food & Farm Coordinator in this initiative. 5. Summer Intern at Heyday Farm in Bainbridge Island, Washington

Heyday Farm is two newly renovated historic farms (25 acres total) on the south end of Bainbridge Island that is a hub for promoting sustainable agriculture in partnership with other local organizations. They are looking for an intern to actively participate in some or all of the following areas: Livestock care (poultry, pig, cattle), fence building, land clearing and soil preparation, greenhouse plant propagation, produce preparation (egg and chicken processing), record keeping, and ‘in-the-field’ training. *Although this internship is unpaid, you can apply for funding through Middlebury at go/summerfunding.

6. Campus Sustainability Assessment Intern at the University of Chile in Santiago

The University of Chile faculty has been working on a transversal sustainability initiative over the last 2 years that includes changes to the curriculum, promoting service learning and public workshops, and establishing a recycling program. This intern will propose and apply a methodology for comprehensive sustainability assessment, using the STARS system (https://stars.aashe.org/) and adapting it to the University. Art Teacher Assistant at Multi Arts in Hadley, MA

Deadline to Apply: April 15

Work with fantastic professional artists and expand your potential as a teacher and artist by assisting with the Multi Arts Day Camp. Paid Administrative Intern at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury, VT

Interning at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury will allow you to get excellent hands-one experience in all areas of management and production! Arts Festival Administrator at Valley Arts Foundation and Festival in Waitsfield, VT

The Valley Arts Foundation is a small non-profit located in the Mad River Valley, Vermont. It puts on the annual Vermont Festival of the Arts, which has been chosen for three years in a row as one of Vermont’s Top 10 Summer Events. As an intern, you will assist the Executive Director in the administration and execution o f the 2012 Vermont Festival of the Arts by offering administrative and organizational assistance. Additionally, the administrative intern will be responsible for one event during the festival and take ownership of the entire project. For all of you PoliSci people out there, you’d better head over to MOJO and check out all of the awesome summer internship opportunities currently available for you. I’ve highlighted a few that have deadlines coming up in the next week or so, but be sure to go on MOJO to see the latest and greatest on these positions and MORE! 1. Paid Office of the Secretary Fellowship at the Department of the Interior in Washington, DC

Deadline to Apply: March 18

The Department of the Interior is the nation’s principal conservation agency. In addition to protecting America’s natural and cultural resources, the Department also manages about one-fifth of the land in the United States that supply 30 percent of the nation’s energy production. This internship program provides placement for qualified college students to work in the Office of the Secretary of the Interior giving them the opportunity to work with some of the Department’s senior policy advisor in areas such as the Office of Congressional Affairs, the Office of Communications, the Office of External Affairs, the Scheduling Office, and the Office of the Executive Secretariat.

2. Summer Internships with Senator Patrick Leahy in Montpelier & Burlington, VT; Washington DC

If you have an active interest in government, you should consider the unique experience of joining Sen. Leahy’s staff as an intern! The internship program provides an opportunity to experience the legislative process at work while becoming an integral part of the Senator’s office. Internships are available in the Burlington, Montpelier, and Washington, DC offices. 3. City Government Internships at the NYC Mayor’s Office in NYC

City government internships allow students to make important contributions to the City while participating in a challenging and rewarding work experience. Interns participate in a special seminar series that features top City officials presenting overviews of municipal government, specific agencies, and the latest issues confronting the City, and get an insider’s look into the workings of city government and its very departments. 4. Editor, Research, and Publications Assistant at the US Dept. of Education in Washington, DC

The U.S. Department of Education is the agency of the federal government that establishes policy for, administers and coordinates most federal assistance to education. It assists the president in executing his education policies for the nation and in implementing laws enacted by Congress. As an intern, you will contribute to the editing and publishing of manuscripts about education, perform research as requested by editors to help with publishing assignments, help with the lobby exhibit program by contacting arts advisers, teachers and principals and compiling exhibit information for openings. **Although this opportunity is unpaid, you can apply for funding through Middlebury at go/summerfunding.

As you kick-off Spring semester, it’s important to start thinking about your summer plans. Many organizations and companies have already begun the application process–and deadlines are coming up fast! At the moment, there are over 100 outstanding internship opportunities om MOJO for students of all academic and career interests. Non-Profit:

Paid Summer Internship at El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs, CO

Deadline to Apply: February 17

Through various grants and programs, El Pomar Foundation seeks to enhance, encourage, and promote the current and future well-being of the people of Colorado. This Internship is a unique summer program that provides undergraduate students an introduction to the nonprofit sector and an opportunity to develop professional interests and skills. Interns work with and are mentored by leaders in philanthropy. They serve an important role by providing administrative support for the Foundation’s offices and receive assignments based upon the Foundation’s needs and, to the extent possible, the interns’ interests.

Mayor’s Internship Program-City of Philadelphia

The Mayor’s Internship Program (MIP) with the City of Philadelphia is an opportunity for current college undergraduates and graduate students to learn about and contribute to the city government that manages operations for the nation’s 5th largest municipality. They host the best and brightest students from around the nation to come to Philadelphia every summer and see all the great city has to offer, contribute to projects, and take on tasks including: complete grant applications, compile and analyze financial data, develop training and policy manuals, and assist in planning and implementing key City events across various departments and agencies.

The Arts/Theater:

Paid Administrative Internship at the Middlebury Town Hall Theater

This internship is a total immersion into the complex and multi-faceted life of the theater–you will work in all areas of management and production handling contracts, promotional materials, email blasts, programming, and assisting with the summer Membership Drive. Midd alum Larry Eighmy ’86 is offering this wonderful opportunity! The Stone House Group, founded over 12 years ago by a Middlebury alumnus, provides “building stewardship” for campuses and corporations, working with clients to ensure they are optimizing their resources, building to support their missions and setting and achieving environmental goals for their facilities. Summer Interns have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects in The Stone House Group’s fast paced environment and then be eligible for full time employment upon graduation.

As yesterday, Thursday, marked my final day of classes as a humble Middlebury College student, today marks my final day as your loyal blogger of the wonderful Internships blog here at the Career Services Laboratory of Dreams. I wanted to send off by giving you delicious readers some kibbles and bits of advice on what I have learned about internships during my time:

1) Start early – early bird really does catch the worm. If you know what you are interested in your coming into your first year, second year or what have you, great, talk to your parents, family, and friends to see how you can land an opportunity to get working experience. The more you have the better and the more you have early the easier it will be to land the one you really want later. Even if you don’t know what you want to do, come to Career Services so you can start the exploration process and getting your resume and cover letter ready to fly.

2) Become friends with the people at Career Services – one, they are super cool, and two, they can really help you in the research, application, and interview process. They will also alert you of all of the resources we have here including MOJO, LACN, Vault, Internships.com and many more.

3) Do your research and your internship homework – if you are applying to a company, make sure first and foremost that you understand the company, position, and why you are interested in gaining experience there. Know about the industry and if you have a passion for it then make sure you are able to convey that passion on paper in your cover letter and in the interview.

4) Stay on top of your stuff! – don’t be like me and wait until the last minute to send in application because that is the best way to miss deadlines and to make errors on your apps. Explore all resources and avenues to an internship. Use MOJO, of course, but don’t limit yourself to that one database, use LACN, employer websites, and other internship databases

5) Don’t fret – if you really want an internship and you utilize all of the resources at your disposal and you really work to gain the experience you want, you will get it. Nothing is going to be handed to you, unless you are real lucky, so go out and get what you want. Stay confident and stay humble. You go to Middlebury, you are smart, but there are also a lot of qualified smart people out there too. Just because you don’t get the internship you want doesn’t mean you won’t get another. Get it, baby.

So that was really more of a sympathetic pep talk but I think they are valuable things to remember. It has been a pleasure writing about cheese and internships on this super terrific blog for you beautiful people out there. Continue to read the blog for more juicy updates about Internships and careers and “you don’t go changin.” Boom.

Despite the cold continuing to command our collective core, it’s spring baby! With spring, first comes shower and then, hopefully, some sweet Sunflowers. Rolled up in the middle of all this spring madness and fruitfulness are some wonderful, wholesome, and wild applications to bodacious internships. Here at the Career Services Laboratory of Dreams, internship request forms have been coming in like a cool and entertaining plague that helps little rascals enjoy a nice sea breeze. Now, if that didn’t make any sense to you, as it made little to me, the bottom line is that WE HAVE A LOT OF INTERNSHIPS! Yes, some internship deadlines have passed but all is not lost because there are plenty more coming in by the boat load. My humble and hearty advice to you would be to start applying! Or at least check some of them out. And, contrary to popular belief that MOJO only houses Finance internships, there are internship postings across all fields. PR, Teaching, Non-profit, Marine Biology? You name it, we most likely have it.

Now, I love MOJO as much as Big Boi loves da purp but I want to inform all of y’all sportsfans out there that MOJO is not the end all be all of internship postings. Career Services offers a plethora (9^th grade vocab word…sup) of resources and databases that the everyday Midd Kid can find internship info on. What should you do? Well, definitley chizzy check that LACN jumpoff (you can get to it from MOJO, hit the ‘jump to LACN’ button). Next I would definitely take a quick ol’ peek at the Midd-Only resources on the Career Services website. There you can find links to Internships.com, VAULT, and oodles of other resources.

Do what you would do with your portfolio (but not with your corporation), diversify , baby. You want to get your name out in as many places as you can so that you can, well, give your fine self the best chance possible. I am no necessarily endorsing a shot-gun or spray a pray approach, however. With each internship you apply to, you are not only representing yourself but also our school. Make sure you put time and effort into every application to make sure it reflects the type of person and candidate you want the employer to consider.

So what are you going to do right now? Go for 37 points and 23 rebounds like my boy Kevin Love? With whom I went to Elementary school and played 3^rd grade hoops, btw. Well, probably not…but you should get your cupcakes in gear and start looking at internships before it is really too late. Feel free to stop by Career Services for some drop ins (2-5 PM err weekday)to discuss your internship future or if you just want to talk shop with yours truly. LACN – Embrace it, use it, love it

So, here we are, back at Club Midd doing the whole J-term thing. For me, because I’m so fantastical, I am enjoying the nice mountain breeze and bright sun, maybe I will go skiing one day, maybe I won’t. But one thing I do know, if I was a junior, is that I would be applying to INTERNSHIPS, daddy! You know that you have oodles of time during this delicious and savory month, why not take advantage of it and dominate some applications? Exactly, get on it. You know gosh darn well that the CSO Laboratory of Dreams is just cranking internships top shelf by the boat load so there is never a shortage to the amount of opportunities waiting to be devoured.

When Club Midd enthusiasts and CSO connoisseurs think of where to apply for jobs, they obviously think of MOJO. But I am here to let you beautiful sports fans out there know that there is a sweetastic resource that tastes better than a twisti cone on a summer day called LACN, the Liberal Arts Career Network. Basically, it’s for tubular liberal arts schools such as Middlebury and it has thousands, literally, thousands of internship and job opportunities. Get your hind quarters moving and start filling out those applications! Or as my friends at CNET say, “Tap that App.” Appropriate? Questionable. Catchy? Totally. Tap it.

Given that I am a Midd student, and a senior to boot (what does that even mean?), I have been applying to some jobs. Notably, I just tapped some apps for jobs in DC. But it also turns out that if you are looking for some internships in DC, you’ve struck gold. Not only does LACN have some opportunities to work at the White House, yeah the big one, but it also has some other neat opportunities. Winter Term Internships in Midd

So have you ever thought about doing an Internship over J-Term? Of course you have! Silly me, you all practically LIVE on this blog and have read all of the posts about super terrific Internships over Winter Term. But what if you want to participate in an internship AND want to live on campus!? Sadly, you can’t…just joshin with ya! Alright, not really too funny, at all, but for real, if you want to stay in Midd and dabble with an Internship, you bet your cupcakes you can. There are actually a whopping 9 Internships, yea I said it I said it, 9 Internships for J-Term! In all different fields too. You can be on a board, save lives, do some REAL work for your community, and experience a ton more awesome things. Oh and just a reminder, the DEADLINE for MOST Winter Term ’11 Internships is FRIDAY OCTOBER, 8.

However, there is one little caveat I want to point out to you all fine and lovely people, in order to LIVE on campus while doing an internship, you HAVE to be getting credit for your internship. What does that mean? Well, that means you have to fill out the application for credit. Where is this mystical application? Luckily the beautiful folks here at CSO put that application on MOJO. Conveniently, it’s called Winter Term ’11 Intern APPLICATION for CREDIT. So fill that beast out if you want credit for your internship, no matter if you’re doing an internship in Midd or not. That application is due October 22.
